Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets

Do you ever wonder why celebrities and models always look so good?   Of course, they are blessed with good genes and the liberal use of Photoshop, but they also have access to cache of secret beauty products most consumers know nothing about.  I’m talking about pro products and niche brands that seldom get press.

Cream blush is my go-to product for giving skins a glowing finish. Unfortunately, most cream blushes at the cosmetic counter tend to be  sheer and fade away after a few hours. To the rescue is Ben Nye Cream Blush Wheel  – six gorgeous neutral colors that blend perfectly and last for hours.   And for around $18, a bargain!

Celebrity Makeup Artist Secret - SerafinoSays.comPRO TIP:  I like to use these colors on the lips, too.  Apply with your fingers for a matte finish or add a dab of gloss for a youthful sheen.

Everyone loves lip-gloss, but it needs constant touch-ups to look crisp and flawless.  The secret to a lip-gloss that stays put is invisible lip liner.  Simply trace your lip line with a clear toned pencil (I adore Sally Hansen Invisible Lip Liner) and your gloss will stay for hours.  Fabulous!Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets - SerafinoSays.com

PRO TIP:  Use invisible lip pencils to keep eyeliner in place, too.

Brows can make or break a face.  To achieve perfect brows, most women need several shades of brow powder as well as a wax to seal the deal – but who wants to lug around all those products in their purse?   I love Youngblood Brow Kit that comes with (in four shades) two powders and a matching wax as well as a dual sided angle brush/spoolie and a tweezer – everything you need in one mirrored compact.  Perfection.Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets - SerafinoSays.com

PRO TIP:Always shape your brows in natural light to ensure you see every hair.

One product that is a staple in every makeup artist’s kit is Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre. This miracle cream can be used as a primer, moisturizer or makeup remover.  Highly concentrated, this wonder cream is perfect for all skin types and ensures a flawless foundation application.

PRO TIP:  I like to use a dab on dry elbows or rough knees before applying self-tanner.

Concealer can be tricky.  Every gal needs it, but apply too much or too little and you can have problems.  Senna Cosmetics HD Hydra-Cover Concealer  is foolproof every time you use it.  Each compact has three shades to customize coverage. The light peach shade neutralizes blue/gray shadows under the eyes. The yellow shade conceals any redness around the eyes and face. The deeper neutral beige shade covers all facial flaws, blemishes and pigmentation.   And it never gets dry or crusty under your eye.

PRO TIP:  In a pinch, this concealer can be used as a full foundation or as an eye shadow primer.

“Mother’s Day Beauty Tips”

Mothers Day Beauty - SerafinoSays

Photographers: Unknown – My Mom 1963

Mother’s put the interests of her children ahead of her own spending much of the time transporting kids between school and activities, managing domestic chores, and many bring home a paycheck on top of all her motherly duties. With her leisure time, mothers like to…who are we kidding, what free time?  The ability for mothers to find time to eat and sleep is nothing short of a miracle.

Even on Mother’s Day she will be fortunate to find a couple spare minutes for solitude, or squeeze a few extra dollars from the household budget to splurge on herself.  Don’t despair mothers!  SerafinoSays has a few Mother’s Day Beauty tips and tricks for the mothers that devote her life to her family.

Steep a Cup of Tea: If you have time to boil water then you have time to experience aromatherapy.  Tea has the therapeutic potential to treatment of many health issues, plus the aroma can alter her mind and mood.  Peppermint tea – controls what you eat, Green tea – builds metabolism, Rose tea – prevents constipation, Oolong tea – promotes fat burning, Star anise tea – promotes digestion.

Homemade Exfoliate: Smoother, softer skin is as near as a box of baking soda.  Mix 2 Tbsp Baking Soda with distilled water into a soupy paste.  Apply the paste by making small circles over the entire face (avoiding eye area) for 3-5 minutes.  Rise well and revel clean, glowing skin.  You can add a drop of lemon for a fresh scent.

Comfortable Tootsies: There are few sensations more satisfying and relaxing than having the soles of your feet massaged.  What you can do for yourself is after a hot shower or bath scrub rough patches with a foot rasp, pumice stone or even a nail file (for best results spread baby lotion on your heels beforehand to seal in the moisture).  When filed and smooth, pat dry then slather on a ton of lotion and cover the tootsies with a thick pair of cotton socks.  You’ll awake to happy feet!

Quick Relaxation: Start by breathing properly!  Place one hand on your tummy then take four seconds to breathe in and four seconds to breathe out (count slowly as you inhale/exhale) while you focus the attention on the movement of your hand.  Do this for five breath cycles.  To further relieve tension bend your toes up as if to touch your heel, then hold them curled as you tighten your thighs, buttocks and fists.  Before releasing, now take a deep breath and hold it while you clench your jaw, and close your eyes.  Hold this position for five seconds, then let go all at once to feel the tension drain from your body.

Met Ball 2013

Nikolaj+Coster+Waldau+PUNK+Chaos+Couture+Costume+SerafinoSays

Since 1948 the Met Ball is the pinnacle of New York City’s annual social events, and also happens to be considered the fashion industry’s premier Red Carpet event.  The Met Ball celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Art Museum’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute.  Having all the leading celebrates, socialites, business icons and royalty at one gala is a paparazzi’s Super Bowl and World Cup all wrapped up in one.

The Costume Institute is a department within the Met containing over 35,000 customs and accessories.  For decades the entire collection had its own gallery, but due to the collections fragile condition it is now shown only twice yearly.  And even then, only specific designers and themes are shown so only small elements of the entire collection are ever on display.  Met Ball Edgar+Ramirez+Suits+Men+s+Suit+SerafinoSays

There are approximately 700 tickets available for the dinner, making it the most sought-after invitation.  The nearly $4 million raised covers the Institutes entire operating costs for the entire year.  And the $2 million budget to put on the Met Ball dinner is covered entirely by Vogue Magazine and Chanel.

I will be racing between hotels to attend to my celebrity clients Edgar Ramirez recently seen in Zero Dark Thirty, The Bourne Ultimatum, Domino and Carlos, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star of HBO’s medieval-fantasy  Game of Thrones, and films Oblivion and Mama.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Men’s Health Cover

Over the past year Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has battled alongside Tom Cruise as a resistance solider in the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film Oblivion, raised his abandoned nieces with Jessica Chastain in the horror film Mama, reprises his television role as Jaime Lannister the warrior swordsman from a privileged family in the medieval fantasy Game of Thrones, and struggles to preserve an emotional marriage to the world’s top war photographer played by Juliette Binoche in the upcoming A Thousand Times Good Night.  Pheww!

Such a demanding schedule takes a physical and emotional toll on anyone.  In this month’s Men’s Health you can learn how Nikolaj stays fit and healthy with a workout routine you can do at home or on the road.  I was very excited to be the the lead groomer on the photo shoot for Men’s Health, it was my job to keep Nikolaj looking fresh and sexy while he illustrated his workout routine.

“Laura Osnes Cinderella”

Laura Osnes Cinderella

Laura Osnes Cinderella - SerafinoSays.com

Holy Glass Slippers!!!  My sweet friend Laura Osnes, none other than Cinderella herself, was nominated for her second Tony Nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.  This is huge news because; a) Laura is a true a showbiz sweetheart, b) she is oozing with talent and deserving of recognition.

I want to share with my readers the events leading up to receiving this exciting news.  My day started with the usual cup of java while simultaneously blogging, emailing, taking a phone call from my parents, and of course playing with my little pooch Ringlett.  Around 8:30 am my stomach began to growl and I realized no matter how many times I opened my refrigerator and cabinets that NOTHING looked like it would solve my hunger.  The only and obvious solution was to grab my sweetie and head to Market Diner on 43st & 11Ave.  New York City’s best diner and my home-away-from-home!

We found our usual booth (no menus necessary since we are regulars) and my sweetie predictably ordered a fresh muffin and I went with the very out of character but latest obsession of grits with a dab of butter.

While at breakfast one of my besties Natalie Hill (Laura Osnes and I share a bestie in Nat) sent a text inviting me over to her apt to extend a congratulatory hug to Laura. Since the java hadn’t fully kicked-in it did not occur to me that the Tony Award Nominees were recently announced.

Once I finally realized what was happening I inhaled my grits, guzzled my java and bolted out of the diner to congratulate my newly nominated friend…… But STOP!

I suddenly received a frantic text from Nat to hang-tight at the diner since Laura was in the midst of being bombarded with emails, texts, and calls from every form of media.  They all wanted their chance to interview Laura and capture the Broadway starlet’s reaction to her 2nd nomination.  While the Oscars may attract a larger national viewing audience, Broadway’s own Tony Awards is an enormous event in the Big Apple and among theater fans worldwide.

Following Nat’s advice I headed back to my usual booth and sat on pins and needles.  This was only the beginning of the media madness that Laura, and all Tony Award nominees will have to endure over the next few weeks leading up the the 2013 Tony Awards broadcast.

As you can see by our diner inspired Tony Nomination Brunch picture, we shared hugs and crazy giddy excitement.  My besties enjoyed a scrumptious omelet and I sipped away at another cup of java as we wholeheartedly shared in Laura’s astonishing news.

Laura, I am so excited for you and can’t wait to see you on June 9th 2013

“Matthew McConaughey – MUD”

Matthew McConaughey - MUD -Hair by Kristan Serafino for SerafinoSays

Matthew McConaughey – MUD

No, this is not an article on Spring gardening tips, but instead the movie premier of “Mud” starring one of my favorite clients Matthew McConaughey.  This latest independent film is opening to have reviews.

An original and expressive script, rich character development and formidable acting is what makes an independent film so endearing when compared to the computer-generated imagery and predictable sound-bites of big-budget Hollywood movies.  There is no better example of the deeply emotional impact independent films provide viewers than the newly released movie Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.  Not only has screenwriter|director Jeff Nichols’s movie been called “a newly minted American classic” but Mr. McConaughey’s performance is considered his best ever and even Oscar-worthy.

I was fortunate to accompany Mr. McConaughey as his personal hairstylist and groomer during Mud’s press junket in New York City last week.  The day started with an appearance on Good Morning America, finished with the David Letterman Show, with stops at The View and others along the way.  Mr. McConaughey is as naturally striking in person as he comes across on the big screen so grooming him is not a matter of transforming his look.  When grooming a ruggedly handsome man the objective is to make his hair and skin look natural under varying and intense lighting conditions and camera angles.

Thank you again Matthew for a day filled with fun!

Daily – “Highlight Your Hair?”

Highlights and Lowlights Hair

Red light, yellow light, green light, high light, low light… GO!

Have you ever experienced this… you walk into your salon confident this is the day I am going to walk out with sun kissed blonde hair.  You trustingly settle back into the salon chair to get foils for an hour, followed by another restless 30 minutes while the hair processes, then into the home stretch of an invigorating shampoo and conditioner treatment.  The excitement is mounting.

Finally your colorist begins to dry your newly colored locks. Slowly, but just as surely as your hair begins to dry, butterflies build in the pit of your stomach.  Now, if you have been down this road before then I have a sneaking suspicion you know what comes next.  Strangely similar to a National Geographic documentary on African wildlife, your hair takes on the properties of a chameleon as it mysteriously changes color.  It’s about now that you are saying to yourself, “At what part during my consultation with my colorist did I say I wanted to be a brunette.”

This is when SerafinoSays turns to its big gun Celebrity Colorist Paul Smith.

Paul suggests the purpose of highlights or lowlights in the hair is to add texture and dimension to a person’s hair color.

When you finally decide you are ready for highlights or low lights, here are a few suggestions that will make the process a little smoother when meeting with your colorist.

SerafinoSays Guide to Getting Highlights and Lowlights Hair:

1.  Call and make an appointment with your colorist.

2. Be assured that your colorist and you are on the “same page” by bringing in a “page” (tear sheet) from a magazine showing the color you desire.  Since it is literally impossible to describe a specific color, you want this form of guarantee that everyone involved in the process definitively knows what you want.

3.  Your colorist has a few choices on the technique to highlight your hair.  Most are acceptable, some are not.  Acceptable techniques include; foils to apply the color, Bailage (a free hand painting technique), or frosting (a rubber cap is applied then small strands of hair are pulled through the cap to highlight).  Run for your hair’s life if your colorist attempts to put a frosting cap on your head.  Frosting is an antiquated technique that is a reflection on the salon capabilities.

4.  Usually your colorist will move on to another client while your color is being processed.  During this time enjoy reading a magazine, listen to music, zone out or just enjoy a cup of a favorite beverage.  When the timer rings make sure your colorist is near to check your color, or immediately notify an assistant that your time has expired.  Bleach is a potent chemical that will continue to lighten your hair until removed.

5.  If your colorist suggests a deep conditioning treatment after your shampoo then spring for the few extra bucks and treat yourself to the treatment.  Deep conditioning treatments not only feel good, most importantly, after highlights it adds back moisture and shine to the hair.

6.  Blow drying after coloring is a MUST.  When the hair is wet, or even slightly damp, it is very difficult to see what the finished color will look like.  If your salon charges extra for a blow dry after color, and you already went beyond your budget with the deep conditioning, then there is another solution.  Have your colorist thoroughly blow dry a small section of hair for both the colorist and you to see how the color will look when the hair is completely dry.

7.  When leaving the salon, make sure to go home with the appropriate products for color treated hair.

Here are a few SerafinoSays favorite Products for color treated hair.

Kaaral Purify Colore Shampoo & Conditioner

Redken Blonde Glam Rich Vanilla

Shu Uemera Silk Bloom Restorative Treatment

“Kinky Boots On Broadway”

Kinky Boots On Broadway New York City

How excited was I when my good friend Jill Seimen asked me to be her date for the soon-to-be-hit show Kinky Boots on Broadway?  The answer…Very Excited!  In a New York second we left our hubby’s in the dust for a girls night out on Broadway!

We began our evening with a scrumptious dinner at Marseille-NYC.  Over a glass of vino we did lots of catching up on all things “girl talk.”  Once our check was paid we started our walk the few blocks over to the theater, but not before our pre-show ritual of stocking up on a package of Twizzlers and bottles of water.

Kinky Boots On Broadway - Photog: Unkown - SerafinoSays.com

Since I live in the theater district it makes walking past the ever-changing Broadway marquees unavoidable.  And since the theater district located in the heart of Times Square has become exhaustively congested I find myself less interested in the spectacular sights and sounds of Broadway and far more interested in how to navigate through the waves of people.  As a result I walk by theaters daily and rarely notice what play, musical and actors are coming to Broadway, or on their way out-the-door.  Tourists would categorize me as a “typical New Yorker, always in rush to get to where they are going,” but I beg to differ.  I like to think of it as “maneuvering a challenging labyrinth of tourists packing the sidewalks four-wide while endlessly snapping pictures of the lights on Broadway.”

Kinky Boots On Broadway - SerafinoSays.com

I mention the above because when Jill handed me my tickets for Kinky Boots on Broadway I have to admit having blindly walked past the theater countless times without ever noticing the marquee.  Jill was kind enough to give me a 30- second download how the play was based on the Miramax motion picture “Kinky Boots”, from the book written by Harvey Fierstein, with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper.

Side Note:  I was giddy with excitement upon learning that Cyndi Lauper wrote the music and lyrics.  I worked with Cyndi a few years ago on an album cover and video shoot.  I fondly recall that day as being one of my favorite photo shoots of all time.  Cyndi was delightful and listening to  her belt out  Etta James’ popular tune “At Last” was like listening to Etta herself.  Her voice is just that good.

Sorry, I digressed!

Kinky Boots On Broadway - Photog: Unkown - SerafinoSays.com

If you are like me and unfamiliar with the book, movie or play then allow me to provide a brief overview; Kinky Boots is a story about a failing shoe factory that reinvents itself as a manufacturer of fetishwear for the cross-dressed gent.  It’s summed up best when Charlie Price, who is the last hope for the struggling Price & Son shoe company, says “There must be a niche market for properly built-to-last women’s boots for women who are men.”  From this point Kinky Boots had me!  What followed was a perfectly balanced sequence of sharp script and brilliant songs.

It made me laugh, it made me cry but most of all it left me feeling a little Kinky in my boots!

Oh and for all you Cyndi Lauper fans “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”…. at least Jill and I did! :)

“Emmy Rossum’s Beauty”

Emmy Rossum’s Beauty

Emmy Rossum Beauty - Hair by @SerafinoSays / Makeup by Ricky Wilson

Emmy Rossum’s red carpet beauty was enhanced by Dior’s Celebrity Makeup artist Ricky Wilson and by yours truly styling the hair.  The stunningly beautiful actress attended the annual New Yorkers for Children spring dinner dance while looking glamorous in Dior.

Emmy Rossum is counted among the very, very few in entertainment that has achieved success as an actress, singer-songwriter, and beauty icon.  From acclaimed acting roles in the film Mystic River, and the musical lead in Phantom of the Opera, to the persevering Fiona Gallagher on Showtimes smash hit Shameless, to Emmy’s new album, Sentimental Journey, she always delivers a memorable performance.  And if this triple threat isn’t enough, the world’s leading fashion houses and beauty editors consider Emmy an ideal women to model the latest fashions.

I thought you may enjoy learning how such a wonderful opportunity to work with Emmy came about.  It begins with a call from Emmy’s publicist, Jeffrey Chassen, asking if I was available to style her hair from a charitable dinner event.  A publicist’s role is to be the liaison between their talent and the media.  A publicist promotes their clients brand and makes them more visible within their market.  Of course I jumped at the chance to work with Emmy.

When I arrived at Emmy’s we immediately evaluated her dress and accessories before discussing how the hair should be styled.  The hair and makeup stylists typically have very little time before their client has to depart for the event so you get down to work quickly.  We tossed around a few ideas such as a classic chignon or the hair swept to the side.  I then suggested we go for something a little less predictable, while still stylish.  I envisioned Emmy with a hairstyle that enhanced her high cheek bones and facial structure while also drawing the admirers attention to Ricky’s cat eyes and full pink lip.  Equally important is the element of the stunning Dior dress, which needs to be complimented by the hair and makeup.

Emmy agreed with my vision and we agreed the hair should be half up and half down.  I first straightened her hair, while keeping the sides slicked tight.  I then pinned the hair just below the crown.  I added subtle height at the crown and smoothed the remaining hair so it appeared to effortlessly cascade over the sides pulled back.  This would give her hair the perfect blend of modern and chic.

She looked absolutely gorgeous!

Make sure to check out Emmy’s new album here.

“Dallas – John Ross Ewing Jr – Josh Henderson”

Dallas – John Ross Ewing JR – Josh Henderson

On your next trip to New York City I highly recommend getting tickets to the LIVE taping of Kelly & Michael Live.  They have an incredible chemistry as hosts and a wonderful ability to engage the audience in their fun.

Although I wasn’t in the audience last week, I was having my own fun backstage as the Hairstylist (referred to as the Men’s Groomer) for the show’s special guest Josh Henderson.  Josh may be best known to the television audience as John Ross Ewing, Jr. from TNT’s smash hit Dallas.  Josh’s character plays the son of J.R. Ewing, one of the most familiar characters in television history played by the late Larry Hagman.

As you can see by the interview, Josh was having a blast interacting with Kelly and Michael.  And if the laughter from the audience throughout the the interview is any indication of Josh’s popularity then Dallas should have a successful second season.

Yes, yes, yes, I too was having fun hanging with Josh in the green room…Hee-Hee!
