“How To Beat Summer Heat”

Written by: Erica Hungerford

During the hottest days of the summer the last thing any of us want to do is spend more time than necessary under the hot air of a blow dryer. In all honesty, I often wonder why bother when it seems the second your freshly blow dried hair exits the comfortable confines of an air-conditioned building it instantly begins to curl and fluff in the sticky humidity.  This seems to be one of the beauty curses of summer. Any attempt to beautify ourselves on a hot summer day is hindered by the unavoidable sweat and humidity. It’s a constant battle between beauty and the heat…

But here are few tricks to beat the heat this summer… Read more

“Spring Break”

Written by Erica Hungerford

Must haves for Spring Break or a beach get-away

This past Spring Break I spent my time soaking up the sun on the small island of Hilton Head off the coast of South Carolina (and I have the tan to prove it). If there is one thing I learned over my trip is that there are some beauty essentials you cannot go without when your schedule revolves around beach time and party time. Here are a few items were my go-to’s for the week:

Sunscreen specifically for your face

Normal sunscreens can be too heavy for your face, but a lotion with SPF, like Aveeno’s Positively Radiant, provides the same protective power in a lightweight formula that adds a little glow to highlight your sun-kissed face.

Fishtail braid

A fishtail braid is a very fitting look for the beach and is pretty easy to accomplish despite its complicated look. Tie your hair to the side and split the pony into two parts. Then grab a small piece from one side and pull it across to the other. Repeat this until you have a beautiful tail you can show off while you lounge in the sun.

Waterproof eyeliner

Now this is an absolute must. Even if you decide not to splash around in the water, other factors like sweat and a misty ocean breeze can cause your eyeliner to fade or smudge. A waterproof eyeliner will last all day and into the night without fail, like Stila’s Waterproof Eyeliner which comes in a variety of fun colors.

Leave-in Conditioner

Salt water or chlorine can dry out your hair if you don’t keep it hydrated. Comb a leave-in conditioner through your hair after each wash to help prevent against damage and breakage. Moroccan Oil’s Restorative Hair Mask repairs and protects!

After Sun Soother

I personally don’t like the sticky feeling most aloe lotions tend to have. That’s why I picked up Burt’s Bees After Sun lotion instead. Even if the sun doesn’t leave you burned, this lotion replenishes your skin after sun exposure with coconut oil and linden flower extract. Plus, it feels nice and cool after a day in the heat.

College Beauties

Between classes, meetings, and studying there is little time to focus on our hair and makeup.  But there is no need to sacrifice beauty to a busy schedule.  Here are a few tips and tricks for looking cute in class with minimal time investment.

1)    Never Underestimate The French Braid.

Sometimes you wake up on the wrong side of the bed and your hair doesn’t look its best, but that is nothing a French Braid can’t hide.  The best part is that French Braids are so versatile!  You can wear it down the center, across your bangs, or my personal favorite, to the side into a bun.  It also keeps your hair from falling on your face while you are quickly trying to take notes in class.

2)    Mascara Can Go A Long Way.

If you are running late to lecture and there is not enough time to go all-out with your eye makeup, just grab volumizing mascara instead.  I recommend Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara.  Just one coat fills out your lashes and the dark color defines your eyes so you can go without eyeliner.  Wiggle the mascara wand from roots to tips for the best results.

3)    Give Your Eyes A Little Boost.

This is probably the fastest tip in the books to make your eyes look wider and brighter.  Just run a highlighter pencil along the inner bottom corner of both eyes or lightly underline your eyebrows for a little lift.  Eye Bright by Benefit comes highly recommended because it shines without being too glittery.4)    Don’t Forget About Headbands

Running really low on time in the morning?  Try an  Urban Outfitters headband!  Sounds simple, but a cute headband can make all the difference.  Throw your hair up in a messy bun or a ponytail and then add a headband that compliments your outfit for a put-together look that takes under one minute.
