“Madonna, Gwyneth, Sienna & Demi Drink It”

SerafinoSays is a big proponent of drinking water!  In fact, it may just be the most important daily element of your beauty routine.  Regardless of how many creams, lotions, gels, or sprays you utilize, nothing can add a more natural glow than a well hydrated body.

The Mayo Clinic insists, “Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions.  Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.”

Now that you’re convinced of the importance of proper and adequate hydration, I am the first to admit that some days the thought of drinking another 64 ounce bottle seems physiologically impossible.  Therefore I am regularly trying to “spice” up my bottle of water with additives from as simple as crushed ice to a slice of  lemon/ lime.  But some days drinking my daily required amount of water is tantamount to water boarding.

We have found the perfect solution!  Wait for it…..Coconut Water.  We have seen Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller and Demi Moore carrying bottles of coconut water.  Why?  Because it has been recommended by the finest doctors, therapists, and trainers.  It is easy to locate thousands of articles written on coconut water and all its benefits.  The team at @SerafinoSays has found its favorite;  Zico Water.

We turned to our friends at WebMd to get their thoughts on the benefits of coconut water.

“In many countries, coconut water is thought to have health benefits.  Coconut water is 94% water and fairly low in calories.  It seems to be a good source of B vitamins and potassium.  Coconut water contains electrolytes, various plant hormones, enzymes, and amino acids.  Some substances in coconut water could theoretically have antioxidant benefits in the body.

Scientific studies of coconut water have been limited.  One study suggested that drinking coconut water might be associated with a lower rate of heart attacks.  Another small study found that coconut water significantly lowered systolic blood pressure in 71% of people with hypertension.

Coconut water has been used as a way to rehydrate after exercise or illness.  Coconut water has even been used as an emergency substitute for IV solutions.  Also, it may be a good storage solution for a tooth that has been knocked out until someone can see a dentist.

However, for now, there is no scientific evidence that coconut water offers clear heath benefits.”

SerafinoSays figured if coconut water is good enough for Madonna, Gwyneth, Sienna and Demi then it’s good enough for us!  Thank you Zico for being so Yummy!

“If It’s Good Enough For Your Grandma It’s Good Enough For You”

Feeling a little nostalgic over my Aunt’s surprise 80th Birthday party has me reminiscing about my Grandmother, or “Grams.”  Angelina was a second generation Italian American that influenced every step of my young life.  And to everyone that knew her… the best Italian cook west of Italy.  The abundance of fond memories are stirred frequently while simply walking the streets of the City; a whiff of her favorite perfume, the sight of a perfectly quaffed white haired lady, or an Italian love song, each can instantly trigger a distinct memory of Grams.

Just this weekend while perusing the aisles of a local CVS store I came across so many of the products my Grams used, and it got me thinking.  These products were good enough for my Grams, and they have clearly passed the test-of-time, so why wouldn’t they just as good for me today.  Let’s take a look, and who knows… possibly this trip down memory lane will encourage you to add one of your “Grams” favorite products into your daily beauty ritual.  Let’s call it a nostalgic tribute to the women that helped shape us into the strong, yet charming women we are today.

My Gram’s Beauty Products:

1.  Ponds Classic Cold Cream (Est. 1846) : POND’S has been known for simple, effective skin care products that work.  That’s why generations of women have trusted POND’S to leave skin looking and feeling simply beautiful.

2.  Chantilly Perfume (Est. 1941) It was Marcel Billot who was responsible for another great Houbigant fragrance, Chantilly.  A timeless Oriental classic fragrance with a blend of roses, jasmine and Oriental mysteries.

3.  Barielle Total Foot Care (Est 30+ Years):  Barielle’s story began in the unlikeliest of places: the legendary Belmont Racetrack.  Husband and wife equestrian aficionados, Howard and EsteLee Price, devised a breakthrough formulation to condition the hooves of their million-dollar thoroughbred racehorses.  As weeks went by, the Prices discovered that they had also created a million-dollar product for nails—one that would quickly become an integral element in the modern manicure and pedicure.  The cream, which strengthened their horses’ hooves to resist splits and cracks, had the same effect on the nails of the jockeys that applied it.  Reformulated for women and men, the miracle product “Nail Strengthener Cream” was born and Barielle was founded.

4.  Helene Curtis (Est. 1927): In 1950 Helene Curtis developed the generic term hairspray for its new aerosol product, Spray Net.

5.  Vaseline -  The Vaseline® brand, which was established over 130 years ago. Over the years, the brand has worked to develop products that are used by millions of people everyday for a number of reasons — from maintaining healthy skin to helping severely damaged skin to protect and heal itself. 6. Helena Rubinstein  (Est. 1902): Her stylish clothes and milky complexion did not pass unnoticed among the town’s ladies, however, and she soon found enthusiastic buyers for the jars of beauty cream in her luggage. Spotting a market, she began to make her own. Fortunately, a key ingredient was readily at hand.

7. Olay - (approx Est. 1949) – The name “Oil of Olay” was chosen as a spin on the word lanolin“, a key ingredient. It was unique in the early days because it was a pink fluid rather than a cream, packaged in a heavy glass bottle. Wulff and his marketing partner, Jack Lowe, a former copywriter, had tested the product on their wives and friends and were confident in its uniqueness and quality.

“5 Beauty Essentials for Super Bowl Sunday”

This Sunday’s Super Bowl audience of 110+ million is as diverse as any that have watched a televised event in history.  The most obvious contrast is the reason why people watch the game; many are unwavering fans of the game (although a surprising 40% of the viewers are not fans of football), others are fanatical Patriot or Giant fans, or loyal American or National Conference fans, and then there are those people that are simply fans of a good party and funny commercials.

Food is another measure of diversity among fans.  Viewers will consume roughly 8 million pounds of popcorn, 28 million pounds of potato chips, 54 million pounds of avocados (yum…guacamole), and 1 billion chicken wings.  Of course a lot of this food will be washed down with 350 million gallons of beer.

Yet another measure is the characteristics of the audience.  The Super Bowl will be broadcast to nearly 235 countries and territories, in 34 languages…of which only one country where the word “football” doesn’t mean soccer.

SerafinoSays came up with another rather unorthodox measurement that is accompanied with a perfect solution.

5 Essentials for Fanatical Football Fans:

1.  The Lip Biters: Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Soothing Lip Balm.  Soften up with this luxurious lip balm. With aloe vera to smooth and hydrate, and peppermint oil to calm and soothe.

2.  The Nail Nibblers: Creative Nail Design Toughen Up  A strengthening 3-free base coat for thin, weak nails.

3.  The Hair Pullers: New York Giants or New England Patriot Hats.  No better way to keep your hair hidden!

4.  The Teeth Grinders:  Eclipse Sugar-Free Gum.  The crunchy outer shell delivers a burst of flavor providing incredibly fresh breath and great taste.

5.  The Screamers: Luden’s Throat Lozengers. Soothes Everyday Throat Irritation

Always remember, it may help to  laugh, scream, cry and even pray, but tossing a can of beer at your flat screen TV will never help your team win.  It will just be a waste of a good can of beer!  Go Giants!

“Beauty Has No Age”

This past weekend my Aunt Louise (aka “Weezie“) celebrated with a surprise 80th Birthday Party.  Family flew in from all over the country to celebrate in this wonderful occasion.  At first I thought surprising an 80 year old might not be the best idea, but considering my aunt is a nurse and half of her guest list consisted of doctors and nurses, my concerns were put to ease.  Anyway, my Aunt Louise is the definition of “80 Years Young” with an abundance of energy.

Seeing my Aunt’s shock when friends and family cheerfully shouted SURPRISE, followed by the tears of joy was truly priceless.  The evening was filled with dancing, eating, drinking, storytelling, and tons of laughter.

The highlight of the night came when Aunt Weezie and her 92 year old friend Stella discovered the photo booth.  The table outside the photo booth was piled high with crazy hats, scarves and glasses.  Aunt Weezie and Stella carefully tried on several options before settling on just the right combination of hat and glasses.  Aunt Weezie claimed the “Jackie O” glasses while Stella reached for the “naughty” glasses.  (Yes, “naughty”, her words exactly…LOL)

The ladies settled into the booth, closed the shade and all barriers of proper lady-like demeanor was left on the other side of the curtain.  From outside the booth you could hear screams of laughter and an occasional “Gosh darn, we look good.”

It was at that moment that it hit me.  Beauty has no age!  Regardless of their ages, the camera in that booth perfectly caught the inner beauty of Aunt Weezie and Stella.  The rest is just as they would say “gravy”.

Daily – “What Vitamins Are Right For Your Hair”

Aside from helping women to feel beautiful when they leave my chair, I cherish every opportunity to share my tips, tricks, fundamentals and experiences as a hair stylist.  A few months ago I was challenged by a client’s query on what vitamins they should I take to assist in hair growth.  While I am familiar with the chemistry behind the practice of trichology, which is the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp.  I have even referred actors and models to trichology clinics for treatment and care since their hair is regularly abused by excessive product, heat, tension, wigs, and so on.  I felt “challenged” because I have not adequately researched vitamin treatments for the hair and scalp.  In order for me to offer creditable advice, or write an honest blog post on a topic, I insist someone on the staff always uses a product personally or compiles creditable research to share with our readers.  In order to answer my client’s question about vitamins to promote healthy hair SerafinoSays first conducted online research, followed by corroborative conversation with specialist, then the final test was person use… here are the results!

SerafinoSays Search for the Perfect Vitamin:

1.  Research:  We decided to turn to our friends at WebMd to find out the best Vitamins to help improve the health of your hair:

Essential fatty acids — especially omega-3 fatty acids — play a key role in skin, hair, and nails. You should eat some of these foods, which are rich in omega-3, every day:

  • Salmon, tuna, mackerel, and other fatty fish
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Walnuts and almonds

Vitamins B-6, B-12, and folic acid are also important to your hair. Vegetarians and vegans often don’t get enough of these vitamins.

Good sources of vitamin B-6 include bananas, potatoes (both white and sweet), and spinach.

Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables — especially citrus fruits and tomatoes — will help you get folic acid. Whole grain and fortified grain products, beans, and lentils also contain folic acid. Major sources of B-12 include meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products.

Protein is also critical for keeping hair healthy, but many people don’t get enough. Lean meat like fish, chicken, eggs, and soy products are good sources of protein; eat one serving every day.

Because trace minerals like magnesium and zinc also affect hair, it’s a good idea to take a daily multivitamin.

2.  Head to a Vitamin Store:  With our pages & pages of research printed and in-hand, we headed to Whole Foods to speak with their “Supplements Specialist.”  Although understanding the material from WebMD was an entry way to the world of vitamins, we had the very good fortune of speaking with a Vitamin Authority.  Her name was Jill and she was extremely knowledgeable, professional and anxious to assist.  She earnestly discussed every page of our research while making certain to show us each suggested vitamin bottle as we cruised the aisles.  Nearly one hour later, Jill recommended we try BioSil.  Just when we thought we had it all in order, she through us a curve ball.  Although Jill can attest that BioSil flies off the shelve and customers make a point to tell her they were satisfied with the state of their hair, she had not personally used BioSil.  Therefore, we decided we would give it a try.

3.  Be Religious:  As for any vitamin, it is important to follow the usage instructions…religiously!  BioSil says to take one capsule, two times per day.  You do not earn the right to critique a product unless you first play by their rules.

4.  The Waiting Game:  It is often the case with vitamin supplements that they take approximately 3 months to impact our body if taken as manufactures suggest.  We committed to the three months regimen with the following result:

Month 1:  No changes to the hair

Month 2:  We thought we saw the tiniest fuzzy hairs (non-technical term for new growth) growing around our temples.

Month 3:  We definitely noticed more of those fuzzy hairs, as well as the shaft of the new hair thickening, including the existing hair cuticle.  Also, we noticed a few hairs popping up around our crown.

Month 3.5:  We can report that our new hair continued to grow and our existing hair showed signs of more body and elasticity.  We did a pull test on those new strands and they seemed to be strong and healthy.

5. Analysis:  We found that by adhering to the manufactures instructions, our hair appeared to have regrowth.  Your expectations should not be compared with the hair regrowth solutions of women’s Rogaine, or like hair growth formulas.   BioSIl is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.  BioSil is a natural protein specially formulated to help nourish all three essential health & beauty structural proteins; collagen, keratin, elastin.  Keratin is the protein thats packed into your hair shaft providing hair with thickness, strength, and elasticity.  The hardest part about taking the vitamin supplement was simply remembering to take them at all.  Not wanting to fall off the schedule of my test, I decided to set my alarm clock on our phone to remind me twice daily to take the Vitamins.  Overall, we are very excited to see how our hair looks in 6-9 months.  Stay tuned!

(SerafinoSays was not compensated for recommending BioSil for this post.)

Daily – “3 Tips to Beating Back Winter Dry Skin”

Written by Celebrity Makeup Artist Robyn Tamura

To get through the cold of winter, here are some tips to help!

1. Check Your Moisturizer. Skin often gets drier from the change in season. If you feel your skin becoming tight and dry, you might need additional moisture from your cream or lotion. If you don’t like the feel of anything more emollient on your skin, use your “winter moisturizer” at night and regular moisturizer during the day.  Try La Prairie Swiss Moisture Care Face Cream

2. Lube Up. As soon as you get up, apply with a very thick lip balm (I like to use Kiehl’s) so it soaks into skin before and as you get ready for the day. Do the same at night before you sleep. You can also do this all day, but if you’re like me you may be wearing lipstick instead.

3. Body Layer. It goes without saying that you can use a body cream to stave off dry body skin. But if that isn’t enough, use a body oil under your body cream. As soon as you get out of the shower and dry, lightly spritz  The Body Shop body oil while your skin is still slightly damp and then use your body cream. Your skin will be softer and more comfortable than ever!

Daily – “25 Questions – 25 Answers All About Hair?”

Recently SerafinoSays (@SerafinoSays) was asked to participate in a Twitter Party (#hairbykiss) with Kiss Products (@KissProducts).   We had an overwhelming response from our wonderful followers.  Although we tried to answer as many questions during our hour party, we ended up missing out on 25 questions.  SerafinoSays never wants a Hair question unanswered…Giggle!  Please continue to keep those questions coming, but in the meantime we hope these answers help with your divine hair styles in 2012!

1.  Question: @SerafinoSays is it bad to flat iron your hair after you have colored it?

Answer:  While I have never experienced damage using hot tools on newly colored hair, it is always best to ask your personal colorist for their opinion.

2.  Question: @SerafinoSays is it OK to use a flat iron with wet hair?

Answer The short answer is yes, it is OK.  Although, I have not found any evidence to support claims made by wet-to-dry flat irons that they perform better or significantly shorten the styling process.  You would think applying the heat from the flat iron directly to wet hair would speed up the drying process, but I find just the opposite occurs.  It is my experience that wet-to-dry flat irons actually take longer to dry the hair, with inconsistent styling results.  If you do use wet-to-0dry flt irons then be certain to use heat protectant products to protect the hair.

3.  Question: @SerafinoSays at 420 degrees does an iron burn the hair?

Answer: Operating a flat iron at, or near, the manufacturer’s maximum temperature setting is not the biggest problem for your hair.  Traditional flat irons consist of metal or ionic plates that can crush the hair’s cuticle and cause dry, brittle hair.  The Kiss Silicone Protextion flat iron uses ceramic plates for even heat distribution, and most important Double Silicone Bars that minimizes your hairs contact with the plates.  Therefore, at any temperature setting your hair will retain its moisture resulting in healthy, shiny hair.

4.  Question: @SerafinoSays #hairbykiss What are the color trends for 2012? Is color blocking still in?

Answer: Click here for Color Trends for 2012

5.  Question: @SerafinoSays what is the best product to use to make curls last longer?

Answer: For all the answers on how to make curls last longer…click here!

6.  Question: @SerafinoSays when doing your bangs in the video on @KissProducts website, did you use any styling products besides the iron?

Answer: Yes, I always begin by applying product to my wet hair before blow drying.  My latest addiction is Moroccan Oil.  I love the way it reduces the drying time, helps to eliminate frizz, and leaves my hair looking shiny.

*Tip:  When applying products to hair. Begin by emulsifying products in your hands and fingers.  Apply from back of the head to the front of the head.  The   reason for doing this is most of our hair is located in the back of our head.  Beginning at the front of the hair with handful of products might leave the hair weighted down or even greasy.

7.  Question: @SerafinoSays to make hair color last longer what do you recommend?

Answer: 3 tips; we suggest using color treated shampoo & conditioner, keeping your hair protected from excess sun, and don’t wash your hair everyday.  If you just can’t stand the idea of dirty hair, try a dry shampoo to hold you over.

9.  Question: @SerafinoSays what is the best dry shampoo that you recommend?

Answer:  Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo $4.50.

10.  Question: @SerafinoSays Which do you recommend applying before using a flat iron, a hair spray or cream. #hairbykiss

Answer:  If the hair is going to be straight, I will use a heat protectant serum like Rusk Thermal Serum.  If I am adding volume or wave to the hair, then I will use FHI Hot Sauce.

11.  Question: @SerafinoSays what is your favorite trick when using a hair straighter?

Answer: Take advantage of the hair straightener’s versatility!  As an example, a flat iron is the perfect tool to achieve lift & volume.  How’s that for an oxymoron!  Here is a video explaining the quickest and easiest way to add Volume in less them 5 minutes.  Also, you can easily and safely add lift to your hair throughout the day since the Silicone Bars of the Kiss Protexion flat iron protects your hair from heat damage.  Simply place the flat iron at the roots of the hair and rotate the iron 180 degrees.

12.  Question:  @SerafinoSays is it OK to use a flat iron everyday?

Answer: Yes, as long as you are using it properly.  3 rules to follow; make sure to use a heat protectant on the hair, test the temperature of the iron on a small section of hair before completing the entire head, and use an iron that will protect the hair from damage.  The reason why I love my Kiss Silicone Protextion flat iron is because of the Silicone Bars that protect the cuticle from being crushed resulting in frizz and split ends.

13.  Question: @SerafinoSays Does the thermal protectors makes hair hard?

Answer: Yes, most products can leave hair hard after using a flat iron.  But, no worries.  If the hair gets hard/stiff after ironing, just use your fingers or a brush to break the bond and soften the hair.

14.  Question:  @SerafinoSays I wear glasses and end up with ‘side wings’ when I put them on, my hair is feathered back. any suggestions?

        Answer:  Two Suggestions:

A.  Before putting your glasses on you want to spray your fingers with a little hair spray, then tuck your wings behind your hair.

B.  Embrace your wings!  Sometimes flippy, kicky, textured hair can be alluring and fun.  Hair is not always meant to be perfectly quaffed!

15.  Question:  @SerafinoSays my hair is thick and coarse any tips for softening?

Answer:  Try using a deep conditioning treatment once a week or possibly twice depending on the density and texture of the hair.  One of my favorites is Kerastase NutriDefense

16.  Question:  @SerafinoSays does anyone make a sunscreen for hair? I run and get sun color changes on the tips of my hair.

Answer:  Try Phyto Plage “l” originale” Protective Beach Spray. Great for hair exposed to external stresses such as chlorine, salt water, and sun.  Great for color-treated hair.

17.  Question:    @SerafinoSays  I have frizzy hair.  How do I achieve a smooth shiny hair during the winter?

Answer:  Drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated during the brutal winter months…YES, drinking water not only hydrates your body, it also hydrates your hair.  You can also try using a smoothing serum like MorrocanOil before the hair is blown dry.  Here are a few tips to creating the perfect blow dry.

18.  Question:  @SerafinoSays do you have tutorials on your YouTube channel and do you take requests?

Answer:  Our YouTube Channel is SerafinoSays and we would LOVE to have requests.  Please email your suggestions to Linsey@SerafinoSays.com.  We answer every question, and… as quickly as possible.

19.  Question:  Do color treated shampoos really work?

Answer:  It depends on what you mean by “work.”  Most color treated shampoos & conditioners will enhance or revitalize richness and depth while adding shine, but they do not add color to the hair.  Make sure to read the labels carefully.  I recommend if your hair is color treated that you stay clear of a “cleansing” shampoo since it will pull out the color quicker than color treated products.  The most important thing when shopping for shampoo & conditioner is to look for products that will add moisturize.  This will help to keep hair looking shiny and feeling great.

20.  Question:  @SerafinoSays what kind of brush is good for hair, stiff plastic bristles or natural? #hairbykiss

Answer:  Having the right tool for the right job is important!  Click here for “How To Pick the Perfect Brush”

21.  Question:  @SerafinoSays thankyou- is there something to stop the tangling- like use more cream, or mousse? I don’t want it greasy #hairbykiss

Answer:  To help eliminate the tangles, try Bumble & Bumble Leave In Conditioner. 22.  Question:  @SerafinoSays How do you create volume and keep it with super long hair @KissProducts #hairbykiss

AnswerLayers, Layers, Layers!  This may be difficult to comprehend, but sometimes you need to cut away hair to achieve the look of having fuller hair.  So don’t get scissor-shy when your see the shear coming at you.  Ask your hair stylist to give you seamless layers.  These are layers that are cut into the interior of your hair that allows for movement and most important reduces weight that drags down volume.  And a good layering cut should be transparent and will not look choppy.  The layers will create movement therefore creating the illusion of more volume.  Here are some great tips  on how to consult with your stylist.

23.  Question:  @SerafinoSays Any tips on preventing cowlicks in the morning?

Answer: You have two choices, love it or hate it.  If you are a lover, then you have embraced the added volume a cowlick naturally provides.  If you are a hater, then grab your comb & blow dryer and begin by wetting the cowlick.  Next you continually alternate the direction of your combing over the cowlickwhile drying the hair.  The alternating movement of the comb combined with the gradual heating from the blow dryer will flatten the cowlick down.

24.  Question:  @SerafinoSays what is the best way to comb your hair when its wet?

Answer:  Combing hair wet is perfectly acceptable, as long as you take the time to gradually comb through small sections at a time.  Sectional combing assures that you do not tear away at unwanted knots.  Once sections have been eliminated of small knots, then comb the entire head from front to back. Try using one of my favorites the Cricket Pro 30

25.  Question:  @SerafinoSays Are apples really good for your hair?

Answer:  I’m not certain apples will keep your hair healthy, but there are certainly foods that will do the job.  Just click here for several food recommendations.
