Beauty Bargains

After a long and weary winter, most of us are in need of a serious beauty reawakening. I love nothing more than buying and suggesting new beauty treats.  But that doesn’t mean I spend all my time at the Barney’s cosmetic counters.  No way, missy, I love a beauty bargain.  If you snooped in my makeup kit you would find high-end brands canoodling with fabulous finds from the drug store.  Read on darlings for my Top Five Beauty Bargains for Spring 2014.

Celebrity Makeup Artist David Maderich’s Top Five Beauty Bargains

1) To refresh your lips for a new season, I simply adore NYC New York Cosmetics City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color.  For $2.99, these long lasting chubby sticks of joy come in 12 glorious shades from soft neutrals to bright reds and pinks.  My personal favorite is Fulton Street Fuchsia  – an amazing bright pink that is not only the color of the moment, but looks stunning on everyone.

David’s Pro Tip:  If you’re pinched for time, add a smidge to your cheeks for instant color.

Beauty Bargin

2)  Give your lashes a lift with L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara. Spring is the perfect time to toss your old mascara and try a new formula.  For around $8, this inky black (the blackest black I’ve ever used) lash builder truly makes your peepers pop.  I love the revolutionary butterfly brush that extends and lifts the outer lashes for a sexy sultry look ala Sophia Loren.  What’s more, the fiber-based formula increases your lash volume by 6 times – and it smells divine, too.

David’s Pro Tip: Always wipe the mascara brush with a clean paper towel before applying to ensure a clump free application. sera2

3) After a winter of gloves and mittens, it’s time to let your nails out to play.  The hottest hue on the most fashionable fingers this season is baby blue.  Try Revlon’s Parfumerie Scented Nail Enamel in Tropical Rain a gorgeous semi-matte pale blue with a touch of tropical rain scent – no more icky nail polish smell.   If blue too much for your fingers, try it on your toes.  For $4.99, why not?

David’s Pro Tip:  If your nail polish dries up, add a few drops of polish remover and shake vigorously. Beauty Bargin

4) Have you noticed that every trendy lad or lass is sporting rainbow hued hair this spring?  Too afraid to make the color commitment?  Don’t fret, Try Streekers Wild Weekend Temporary Hair Color.  For $11.95, you can add a streak or highlight of blue, yellow or pink (available in 8 bright colors) and wash it out the next day.  The wand applicator is easy to use and is perfect for going hair crazy for a one night only performance.

David’s Pro Tip: Try mixing the colors for a rainbow effect. Beauty Bargin

5) To pep up dull winter skin, a shimmering illuminator brushed high on the cheekbones will give your face an instant lift and glow.  Rock out with Fergie’s Rose Champagne Glow Shimmer Palette by Wet n Wild and be prepared to have that sassy Grammy glow ala Fergie.   For $5.99, this baked powder is the steal of the season.

David’s Pro Tip:  Try this multi-use powder as an eye shadow or add a dab to your lower lip for an instant sexy pout.

Beauty Stocking Stuffers

Stocking Stuffers

Beauty Stocking Stuffers

I admit it, as a makeup artist, I am obsessed with beauty products. I can’t go near a cosmetic counter without covering myself with powder, paint and potions.  In fact, I’ve never met a beauty product I didn’t like.

If you have beauty aficionados on your holiday gift list, my TOP FIVE beauty stocking stuffers will guarantee smiles on their faces.

David’s Top Five Beauty Stocking Stuffers

1) The latest and greatest hot topic in skincare is facial oils.  My favorite is Jurlique’s Skin Balancing Face Oil.  Blended with a mix of divinely aromatic organic daisy, rose and sweet violet oil, this non-greasy oil provides protection and moisture in harsh winter weather. Smooth on a light layer before bedtime or under makeup to nourish the skin.Beauty Stocking Stuffers

PRO TIP – In cold climates, I like to mix a few drops of facial oil into foundation to give my models a hydrating glow.

2) Another hot item on beauty shelves is facial mists – these refreshing sprays not only give an instant moisturizing pickup, they add vital antioxidants to the skin for cell turnover and revival. My top pick is Sulwhasoo Hydro-Aid Moisturizing Lifting Mist.  This herbal seaweed mist instantly supplies moisture to the skin and relives signs of stress and fatigue.  Fabulous!Beauty Stocking Stuffers

PRO TIP – Headed to an after work party and your foundation is a tad crusty? Give yourself a light mist of spray to refreshen makeup and add a glow.

3) Who doesn’t’ love a new body lotion?  For baby soft skin, try Bodycology Nourishing Body Cream.  Packed with Shea Butter, Aloe Vera and Vitamins C and E, this yummy cream comes in 10 subtle scents – I mad for Wild Poppy and Blackberry Vanilla.  If you have a beauty addict that has everything, this is the perfect gift.Beauty Stocking Stuffer

PRO TIP – If your feet are extra dry, try coating them before bedtime with cream and slipping your tootsies into cotton socks.  In the morning, your feet will be as soft as a baby’s behind.

4) Lip gloss is always the perfect gift. If you have an organic gal on your list, try Aubrey Organics Natural Lips Sheer Tints. These moisturizing wanded lip glosses come in eightnatural shades – I love Sheer Pink – that are packed with rich emollients to keep your lips soft as well as sexy.

Beauty Stocking Stuffers

PRO TIP These amazing glosses can be blended onto the cheeks for a soft glow.

5) A fresh set of brushes can turn anyone into a makeup artist.  I adore the Esum Detailing 9-piece Brush set made specifically for eye makeup.  Draw winged eyeliner, smudge smokey eyes or blend highlighter; these brushes are designed just for the gal that loves eye makeup.   Bravo!

Beauty Stocking Stuffers

PRO TIP – Always wash your brushes every 14 days with a mild shampoo and let air-dry.

“Zombie Makeup Tutorial”

Zombie Makeup Tutorial

Zombie

Just in time for Halloween, a doable Do-It-Yourself  into a terrifying zombie. (Zombie Makeup Tutorial)

When is a DIY project truly DIY project? Answer, when you can actually “do it yourself.”  I have tried countless DIY projects from food recipes to household crafts and they typically run over budget or well outside the capability of the novice.  Well, I found the perfectly scary Halloween DIY project designed by Greg Nicotera, the brilliant make-up designer from AMC’s The Walking Dead and fellow special effects artist Andy Schoneberg.

I was searching online for last-minute Halloween costume ideas when I was thrilled to find a zombie make-up video produced by the Emmy Award winning designers that create hundreds of terrifying zombies for The Walking Dead.  I read the instructions, watched the video and compiled the shopping list required to paint your face a ghastly undead hue.  While buying the on line and my local beauty store I decided to test the simplicity and accuracy of the instructions by videoing myself (without rehearsals) following the step-by-step instructions.

I was pleasantly surprised that the how-to guide left nothing out and was simple to follow.  I particularly like that the instructions weren’t so constraining that you couldn’t personalize the make-up to divulge your inner most zombie.  After lying out all the times it took no longer to finish my zombie make-up than it takes to carve a big pumpkin.  The shopping list looked lengthy at first glance, but most households will already have many of the items required.  The blac wig was my addition. (One of the perks of being an editorial hairstylist is having a closet full of wigs).  You can get the same unkempt effect whether you are using your own hair or a wig.  All you do is apply conditioner directly to your hair.

Shoppping List:

My love of all things zombie originated when grooming Norman Reedus for various photo shoots, red carpet events and Comicon for his hit TV show The Walking Dead.  For those of you that don’t watch, Norman plays the crossbow wielding, good ol’boy Daryl Dixon, who is The Walking Dead’s foremost zombie killer.

Beach Makeup Tips

Beach Makeup TipsMakeup by: David Maderich

Beach Makeup Tips

It’s finally summer, darlings. With sunny skies and sticky dew points , it’s time to put away the matte lipsticks and heavy foundations.  As a makeup artist, I am constantly quizzed on how to stay beautiful in high humidity and scorching heat.

My beach makeup tips: products that are easy to apply and do double duty!

Without a doubt, BB Creams are my favorite go-to multitasking summer beauty products.  What’s not to love about a  wonder cream that provides sun protection, hydration, brightening, treatment and color in one tiny tube.  My favorite BB of the moment is Lumene C+ Illuminating Anti-Aging BB Cream SPF 20 for it’s smooth sheer summer friendly texture.

PRO TIP – To add instant color or glow to your legs, BB Creams are perfect for adding sun protection while smoothing out leg imperfections.

Beach Makeup Tips

Tinted lip balms are a girls BFF in summer.  These little tubes of joy not only come in yummy scents, but provide color as well as protection.  Try Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm, which comes in nine sexy colors.  If lipsneed added definition, use a lip pencil and only trace the cupids bow for extra oomph.

PRO TIP – Use a dab of tinted lip balm on your cheeks and eyelids for a sexy dewy glow.

Beach Makeup TipsBrows are essential for a summertime face, but most pencils and powders sweat or rub off.  To the rescue is TouchBack by Colormark Brow Marker.  I swear, this handy felt-tip marker style pen will not budge.   Apply it in the morning, and forget about it.  Work out, ride the subway, swim in the ocean, dance a rumba, this stuff is staying put.

PRO TIP  - I also use TouchBack by Colormark Brow Marker as a smude-proof eyeliner.

Beach Makeup Tips

Heavy complicated eye makeup is not only time consuming, but inappropriate in warm weather. To get a fresh and easy look, try Eye Majic’s Instant Eye Shadow press-on stencils.  I admit I was weary of this product, but it works like a charm.  Simply choose your color and press the pre-loaded pad onto your eyelid and slide off – it’s that easy.  Yes, fully contoured eyes in seconds.

PRO TIP – If you are headed to a party straight from the office, apply Eye Majic over your existing makeup for a quick change.

Beach Makeup TipsIf you’re going to be soaking up the sun for extended periods, it’s essential to use a SPF product with a high number.  Unfortunately, most high SPF sunscreens feel heavy and greasy on the skin.  After sampling numerous sun loving, but waxy products, a  model introduced me to Algenist Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50. Finally, a product that feels light on the skin and doesn’t interfere with makeup.  Amen. It’s also loaded with anti-oxidants for added protection.

PRO TIP – Keep a bottle in your purse as hand lotion.  Sun spotted  hands are never pretty.

Beach Makeup TipsWhy fight your curls and waves in the summer heat.  Embrace your inner curl girl with a salt spray.  I love Ouidad The Curl Experts Wave Create Salt Spray for it’s light texture that never leaves the hair sticky or crunchy like similar products.  How to use: Jump out of the shower and scrunch a few squirts into your tresses and you are ready to go.

PRO TIP – For extra curl and texture, spray your hair before bedtime and twist your hair into two braids.  In the morning, you will be rewarded with sexy soft waves.

“Beauty Products Save vs. Splurge” with Kristan Serafino

“Beauty Products Save vs. Splurge” with Kristan Serafino

To spend or not to spend…that is the question.  If you’re like me you balance your spending to achieve the best results.  As an example; to achieve a chic style on a modest budget you can combine an H&M shirt, Forever 21 pants, Zara jacket, then a Prada bag.  Voila…you look fine enough to stroll into the offices of Vogue.

The same goes for beauty products.  And the popular host of  New York LIVE, Lilliana Vazquez asked SerafinoSays to show her audience the secret behind the best save and splurge beauty product buys.

Visit this link to discover which beauty products are best to buy from your local drugstore and which are worth spending a few extra bucks for the best results.  By learning to balance your beauty budget you get the most bang-for-the-buck and the end result is comparable to a shopper with an unlimited budget.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets

Do you ever wonder why celebrities and models always look so good?   Of course, they are blessed with good genes and the liberal use of Photoshop, but they also have access to cache of secret beauty products most consumers know nothing about.  I’m talking about pro products and niche brands that seldom get press.

Cream blush is my go-to product for giving skins a glowing finish. Unfortunately, most cream blushes at the cosmetic counter tend to be  sheer and fade away after a few hours. To the rescue is Ben Nye Cream Blush Wheel  – six gorgeous neutral colors that blend perfectly and last for hours.   And for around $18, a bargain!

Celebrity Makeup Artist Secret - SerafinoSays.comPRO TIP:  I like to use these colors on the lips, too.  Apply with your fingers for a matte finish or add a dab of gloss for a youthful sheen.

Everyone loves lip-gloss, but it needs constant touch-ups to look crisp and flawless.  The secret to a lip-gloss that stays put is invisible lip liner.  Simply trace your lip line with a clear toned pencil (I adore Sally Hansen Invisible Lip Liner) and your gloss will stay for hours.  Fabulous!Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets - SerafinoSays.com

PRO TIP:  Use invisible lip pencils to keep eyeliner in place, too.

Brows can make or break a face.  To achieve perfect brows, most women need several shades of brow powder as well as a wax to seal the deal – but who wants to lug around all those products in their purse?   I love Youngblood Brow Kit that comes with (in four shades) two powders and a matching wax as well as a dual sided angle brush/spoolie and a tweezer – everything you need in one mirrored compact.  Perfection.Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets - SerafinoSays.com

PRO TIP:Always shape your brows in natural light to ensure you see every hair.

One product that is a staple in every makeup artist’s kit isEmbryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre. This miracle cream can be used as a primer, moisturizer or makeup remover.  Highly concentrated, this wonder cream is perfect for all skin types and ensures a flawless foundation application.
Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets - SerafinoSays.com

PRO TIP:  I like to use a dab on dry elbows or rough knees before applying self-tanner.

Concealer can be tricky.  Every gal needs it, but apply too much or too little and you can have problems.  Senna Cosmetics HD Hydra-Cover Concealer  is foolproof every time you use it.  Each compact has three shades to customize coverage. The light peach shade neutralizes blue/gray shadows under the eyes. The yellow shade conceals any redness around the eyes and face. The deeper neutral beige shade covers all facial flaws, blemishes and pigmentation.   And it never gets dry or crusty under your eye.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Secrets - SerafinoSays.com

PRO TIP:  In a pinch, this concealer can be used as a full foundation or as an eye shadow primer.

Spring Beauty Trends

It’s that time of year and we can’t wait to read what Celebrity Makeup Artist picked for his Spring Beauty Trends 2013

Written by: David Maderich

It’s spring beauty trends, darling – the perfect season to revamp your beauty routine and welcome a new season. Try my simply tips to shake away the winter beauty blahs and say hello to a sassy spring.

FACE – Spring is the perfect time of year to stock up on beauty potions loaded with sunscreen.  I love Lumene Finland BB Illuminating Anti-Aging BB Cream with Artic Cloudberry This amazing BB cream brightens, hydrates, covers imperfections and protects with a broad spectrum SPF 20. And, darlings, always remember to apply SPF to your neck and chest for extra protection – no chicken necks allowed!Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Lumene - SerafinoSays.com

If your skin needs more coverage, add a smidgen of concealer.  Try MAKE’s Soft Focus Corrective Duo - Conceal/Set and you are ready to go.Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - MAKE - SerafinoSays.com

Pro tip: If your concealer looks dry and cracked after a few hours, blend a touch of Dermalogica Ultrasmoothing Eye Serum over it for instant refreshing.Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Dermalogica - SerafinoSays.com

LIPS – After a long brutal winter, lips need all the help they can get.  Remember to always keep your lips moisturized with a rich balm. I love Sun Bum SPF 30 Lip Balm in Mango  not only for the yummy flavor but also because it never feels waxy.   Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Sun Bum - SerafinoSays.com

Once lips are deliciously moist, try spring’s most fashionable lip trend – nude lips.   I adore Rimmel London’s Stay Glossy Lip Gloss in Non Stop Glamour – a wearable peachy gold.

Pro tip: When choosing a nude lip color, always look for a nude one shade darker than your skin for the perfect tone.

HANDS – After a winter encased in gloves, it’s time to set your hands free. This spring, nude hued nails are all the rage.  Try Butter London Nail Lacquer in Tea & Toast and Crumpet – two gorgeous tan tones.  Try one color on your hands and the other on our toes!  Fabulous.   Spring Beuaty Trends 2013 - Butter London - SerafinoSays.com

Pro tip: If your hands are parched by winter winds, keep a tube of Burt’s Bees Ultimate Care Hand Cream in your purse and apply several times a day.Spring Beauty Trends 2013- Burt's Bee's- SerafinoSays.com

BODY – It’s time to shed the wool sweaters and coats and slip into shorts and short sleeves. For glowing J Lo skin, I suggest Shea Moisture Olive & Green Tea Body Butter from head to toe.Spring Beuaty Trends 2013- Shea Butter - SerafinoSays.comPro tip: Before bedtime, smother your body in a rich cream and toss on an old pair of sweats for an all night moisturizing treat.

EYES  – My two eye makeup wake-ups are mascara and eye cream.  To sooth winter weary eyes, smooth Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm  around your eyes morning and night to calm puffiness and reduce dark circles. Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Algenist - SerafinoSays.com

I am in love with Covergirl’s new Clump Crusher Mascara  I swear, this mascara never clumps and make your lashes thick and plump and ready to flirt.  Spring Beauty 2013 - Mascara - SerafinoSays.com

Pro tip: Replace your mascara every 6 weeks to guarantee fresh and germ free applications.

“Fashion Show Presentation Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013″

Fashion Show Presentation Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013 - SerafinoSays

Fashion Show Presentation – Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013

While it’s entertaining to attend a perfectly choreographed Fashion Show Presentation, I find it even more exciting to watch the organized chaos occurring backstage.  It’s fascinating to see how all the magic is created behind the scenes.  While at Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection, I ran into two friends who were leading the Makeup and Nail teams that were responsible for the creation of the stunning looks worn by the models.

Led by Celebrity Makeup Artist Kristin Hilton, and her team of MAKE artists, they created a contemporary inspiration which referenced modern aristocracy – “a polished girl with a playful side.”  A bold, statement lip was the focus of the look which was offset by the regal, porcelain-like skin.  Click here to add Kristin’s MAKE suggestions to your beauty vanity! (I LOVE the makeup)

SKIN:
Step 1: Kristin began by removing excess makeup with MAKE’s Makeup Remover Wipes
Step 2: She then applied AM/PM Moisture Cream to hydrate dry, winter skin
Step 3: Working from the palm of her hand, where she saturated a stipple brush with MAKE’s Soft Focus Foundation, Kristin blended the foundation onto the model’s skin to create a flawless, porcelain look. Concealer was used where needed to cover any blemishes or under eye darkness
Step 4: Kristin used MAKE’s Expert Veil Brush to powder the forehead, under the eyes, and around the nose to deliver a matte finish with a bit of extra coverage to ensure the look was perfectly polished
Step 5: Finally, Kristin used Matte Finish Eyeshadow in Kalahari – a medium cappuccino brown with yellow undertones – as a contouring blush

EYES:
Step 1: Kristin began by filling in the brows where needed to create a natural yet defined look. She used Expert Brow Definer Brush and Brow Sculpting Duo to provide definition
Step 2: MAKE’s Matte Finish Eyeshadow in Kalahari was also used on the eyes where Kristin brushed the shade into the crease of the lids and blended out to create natural shading
Step 3: She then lined the water line with Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Very Brown and blended Satin Finish Eyeshadow in Aubergine – an intense eggplant purple – into the lower lash line to set the look
Step 4: Finally, Kristin curled the lashes with MAKE’s Eyelash Curler, applying several coats of Defining Mascara. She added a touch of Skin Illuminator in Skir to the inner corner of the eyes to brighten the look and add luminosity

LIPS:
Step 1: Kristin began by applying concealer to the lips to offset any pink pigment that may interfere with the dark, dramatic colour she and Daniel chose
Step 2: She then lined the lips with MAKE’s Lipliner Pencil in Rum Raisin and filled in lips with Silk Satin Lipstick in Beetroot – an intense wine with red undertone

Celebrity Nail Tech and friend Elle, who is a member of Dermelect’s Board of Advisors, requested the help of Rose Velez, manicurist to the stars, to create the two nail looks.  Rose created two variations depending on the models presentation attire.

"Fashion Show Presentation Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013

Look 2:  Mushroom shade and topped with a gold striping tape.

“Makeup Tips”

Makeup Tips

Makeup Tips - Photog: Stuart Tyson - SerafinoSays.com

Makeup Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artist Mathew Nigara are regularly seen in leading publications.  When SerafinoSays caught up with him on a photo shoot for Cosmopolitan Magazine we could not resist asking his 5 Favorite Makeup Don’ts.

This quote should just about sum it up:

“There are no rules of makeup BUT there are guidelines to follow.” Celebrity Makeup Artist Mathew Nigara

5 Don’t of Makeup

  1. Using a concealer which is too light for your skin tone.
  2. Over use of Powder.
  3. Unblended ANYTHING.
  4. Using Lip Liner a line instead of using it for depth of color.
  5. Using an abundance of lip gloss. Unless you are wearing a specially painted French lip that requires a lot of upkeep only use lip gloss in the center of the lip to keep the lips looking supple.  Color should be added with Lip stick.

“Kim Kardashian Eyelashes”

Kim Kardashian Eyelashes -Photog: Unkown - SerafinoSays

Kim Kardashian Eyelashes

If you envy Kim Kardashian eyelashes that are long and full but look more natural than mascara, your answer is individual “faux” lashes. Unlike full fake lashes, individuals are small lash pieces you apply exactly where and how you want to. They come in different lengths—short, medium, long—and can be found at most drugstores. If you’d like to try them (and you should!) here’s the individual lash “how-to”:

We turned to Celebrity Makeup Artist & Beauty Blogger Robyn Tamura for her Kim Kardashian Eyelash application Tips:

  1. Squeeze a bit of lash glue onto a tissue or the back of your hand.
  2. Using TweezerMan tweezers, grab a single lash piece then scarcely dip the lash tip into glue.
  3. Allow the glue to dry on the lash tip for a few seconds.
  4. Delicately place the lash on the lash line where you want length and fullness.Kim Kardashian Eyelashes - SerafinoSays.com
  5. Keep applying pieces until you get the total lash look you want.  Use as few or many as necessary.
  6. Use the same technique to apply lashes to your other eye.  Try to achieve a balanced look.
  7. Once eye lashes are in place, apply a coat of Laura Mercier Mascara.Voila!  The lashes you’ve always been looking for.

Important PRO Tips:

  • If you find the kind you lash you bought are too long, you can use small scissors to clip them shorter.
  • Be sure not to clip flat and straight across, clip unevenly to keep them looking natural.
  • Use a steady hand to place the pieces just right because the glue dries quickly and holds firmly at the angle you place it.
