A Beauty Pro Segment is among my favorite television segments to watch on lifestyle programs.  I love to learn about the latest and greatest beauty products, trends, and tips that a beauty expert has in their bag of tricks.  But wait…. when it’s yours truly about to step in front of the camera on LIVE TV to share beauty & lifestyle tips the enthusiasm turns into butterflies in the pit of my stomach.  Lucky for me, New York Live’s popular hostess Jackie Reid was there to help calm my nerves.

Check out the video above to see some of my “Beauty Pro tips” your “Beauty Resolutions in 2014″.

To spend or not to spend…that is the question.  If you’re like me you balance your spending to achieve the best results.  As an example; to achieve a chic style on a modest budget you can combine an H&M shirt, Forever 21 pants, Zara jacket, then a Prada bag.  Voila…you look fine enough to stroll into the offices of Vogue.

The same goes for beauty products.  And the popular host of  New York LIVE, Lilliana Vazquez asked SerafinoSays to show her audience the secret behind the best save and splurge beauty product buys.

Visit this link to discover which beauty products are best to buy from your local drugstore and which are worth spending a few extra bucks for the best results.  By learning to balance your beauty budget you get the most bang-for-the-buck and the end result is comparable to a shopper with an unlimited budget.

Daily – “Highlight Your Hair?”

Highlights and Lowlights Hair

Red light, yellow light, green light, high light, low light… GO!

Have you ever experienced this… you walk into your salon confident this is the day I am going to walk out with sun kissed blonde hair.  You trustingly settle back into the salon chair to get foils for an hour, followed by another restless 30 minutes while the hair processes, then into the home stretch of an invigorating shampoo and conditioner treatment.  The excitement is mounting.

Finally your colorist begins to dry your newly colored locks. Slowly, but just as surely as your hair begins to dry, butterflies build in the pit of your stomach.  Now, if you have been down this road before then I have a sneaking suspicion you know what comes next.  Strangely similar to a National Geographic documentary on African wildlife, your hair takes on the properties of a chameleon as it mysteriously changes color.  It’s about now that you are saying to yourself, “At what part during my consultation with my colorist did I say I wanted to be a brunette.”

This is when SerafinoSays turns to its big gun Celebrity Colorist Paul Smith.

Paul suggests the purpose of highlights or lowlights in the hair is to add texture and dimension to a person’s hair color.

When you finally decide you are ready for highlights or low lights, here are a few suggestions that will make the process a little smoother when meeting with your colorist.

SerafinoSays Guide to Getting Highlights and Lowlights Hair:

1.  Call and make an appointment with your colorist.

2. Be assured that your colorist and you are on the “same page” by bringing in a “page” (tear sheet) from a magazine showing the color you desire.  Since it is literally impossible to describe a specific color, you want this form of guarantee that everyone involved in the process definitively knows what you want.

3.  Your colorist has a few choices on the technique to highlight your hair.  Most are acceptable, some are not.  Acceptable techniques include; foils to apply the color, Bailage (a free hand painting technique), or frosting (a rubber cap is applied then small strands of hair are pulled through the cap to highlight).  Run for your hair’s life if your colorist attempts to put a frosting cap on your head.  Frosting is an antiquated technique that is a reflection on the salon capabilities.

4.  Usually your colorist will move on to another client while your color is being processed.  During this time enjoy reading a magazine, listen to music, zone out or just enjoy a cup of a favorite beverage.  When the timer rings make sure your colorist is near to check your color, or immediately notify an assistant that your time has expired.  Bleach is a potent chemical that will continue to lighten your hair until removed.

5.  If your colorist suggests a deep conditioning treatment after your shampoo then spring for the few extra bucks and treat yourself to the treatment.  Deep conditioning treatments not only feel good, most importantly, after highlights it adds back moisture and shine to the hair.

6.  Blow drying after coloring is a MUST.  When the hair is wet, or even slightly damp, it is very difficult to see what the finished color will look like.  If your salon charges extra for a blow dry after color, and you already went beyond your budget with the deep conditioning, then there is another solution.  Have your colorist thoroughly blow dry a small section of hair for both the colorist and you to see how the color will look when the hair is completely dry.

7.  When leaving the salon, make sure to go home with the appropriate products for color treated hair.

Here are a few SerafinoSays favorite Products for color treated hair.

Kaaral Purify Colore Shampoo & Conditioner

Redken Blonde Glam Rich Vanilla

Shu Uemera Silk Bloom Restorative Treatment

Kerastase Chroma Cristal

“Dr Hauschka’s Volume Mascara”

Makeup by Regina Harris - SerafinoSays.comMakeup by: Regina Harris

Guys and Dolls….. she’s back! The Skin Care Guru  is going to share another one of her products reviews but this time she has dove beyond the comforts of a skincare regime.  We are excited to be witness to the evolution of  “The Skin Care Guru”and what better do so than with a tube of makeup.

Written by: The Skin Care Guru

So.  You’re probably wondering why TSCG is writing a review on mascara.  Mascara isn’t a skin care item, its a beauty product!  (Then again, I’m assuming that you’re putting that much thought into this whole dealie, which in fact is unlikely to be the case….anyway.)  Yes, its true, mascara isn’t a skin care item.  BUT if you’re allergic to your mascara, or sensitive to it, or it runs and stains the skin around your eyes, causing you to vigorously rub it off, it becomes a skin care issue.  Why?  The skin around your eyes is one of the first areas to lose elasticity, so chronic puffing, pulling, stretching, and other no-no’s are likely to accelerate signs of aging.

Does that sound like I’m reaching for an excuse?  OK, maybe, because like most women I’d rather stroll out naked than without mascara.  However, I’m wildly sensitive to any number of ingredients and thus prone to redness, puffing, itching, etc.  After one particularly nasty reaction that left me looking like I had parasites invading my eyelids, I turned to mineral mascara, which seemed like a dream come true.  No parabens!  No phlatlates!  Then, my mineral mascara of choice was discontinued.  After sitting shiva for a week, I started an epic search for its replacement.Dr Hauschka's Volume Mascara

Last week, I received a tube of Dr. Hauschka’s Volume Mascara.  Every granola-eater knows Dr. Hauschka, one of the most venerable organic skin care lines.  But mascara?   Huh.

PACKAGING:  Plain black tube in a nice, normal size.  When did mascara packaging start looking like something better kept discreetly in a bedside drawer??

BRUSH:  Medium density spooly, no taper.  Fibrous.

CONSISTENCY:  Semi-wet.  Not so wet that your lashes stick together, though, instead, it goes on like silk without the downsides of a wet product.  Pretty much the ideal;  allows the user to brush on several layers quickly without snags.

CLUMP FACTOR:  Zero.  I mean ZERO.  As in none.  Kind of amazingly none, given that it does actually give your lashes some heft.  (See below.)

COVERAGE:  Medium.  One or two swipes looks fairly natural, three or four starts to look dramatic.  But still without a single clump, and even better, without the buildup at the tip of the lash that’s so common (and icky looking.)  So while the drama factor climbs, the undesirable stick-lash look is never a risk.

SMUDGE FACTOR:  Medium-high.  This was really my only gripe;  for my day-long mascara, I do expect staying power, and staying power that I don’t have to think about, as I am totally unlikely to look in the mirror between 7:30 a.m. and the end of the work day.  (Who wants to see herself in flourescent bathroom lights??)  At day end, I did find smudges under my eyes three days out of five, though not huge raccoon smudges.

Conclusion?  I would absolutely buy this mascara again.  Need to experiment a bit with smudge control, but love the effect, love the lack of clumps.

“Happy July 4th”

Hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, biscuits, and a slice of apple pie is the perfect lead into the fireworks celebrating Independence Day.  (A brief history lesson; The United States commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain on July 4th, 1776.)

SerafinoSays has written blogs honoring the symbolism of Independence Day, Fleet Week, Uncle Sam, and praising our military.  For this patriotic holiday we wanted to link the day our country chose to seek its freedom with beauty or lifestyle but we also didn’t want it to come across awkward or being discourteous.

Therefore with a healthy dose of respect to the principle behind the Fourth of July, we decided to have some fun by celebrating a few of our favorite products based on our country’s theme of red, white & blue. (Another brief history lesson; These three colors purportedly represent the ideals and beliefs of our Founding Fathers. White represents purity and innocence, red represents hardness and valor, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.)……. [Read more...]

“Product Review”

Sometimes our job at SerafinoSays fills us with immense satisfaction.  This is one of those days.  Mandel Beauty Products submitted their new line of shampoo & conditioner to our product review board.  While the review board unanimously concluded to  endorse the hair care products, that’s only part of the story.  You see, not only does Mandel Beauty Product’s  shampoo & conditioner make you look good, but feel good too.  And by “feel good,” I mean that feeling a satisfaction you get when doing a good deed… [Read more...]

“3 Steps For The Beauty Road Warrior”

Written by: Kristan Serafino

What @SerafinoSays likes best about Twitter  is that we never know where it will take us, what it will uncover, or what inspiring relationship is formed.  Discovering our new friends at The Midlife Road Trip is an example.  While we stumbled upon MidLifeRoadTrip.tv during a random exchange of tweets, we were immediately fascinated by her spirit.

@SandiMcKenna and her Road Warrior @RickGriffin met on Twitter and quickly discovered a friendship based on the shared passion for food, travel and adventure.  They daringly decided to act upon their tweets and hit the road traveling to small towns and big cities, all the while tweeting about their endless escapade.

SerafinoSays was having so much fun tweeting with @SandiMcKenna that we decided to set up a time to chat on the phone.  We learned that MidLifeRoadTrip.tv was chosen by Rand McNally as a Road Rally finalist in there “2012 Best of the Road” competition (www.blog.bestoftheroad.com).  This means Sandi & Rick are off on a Summer road trip visiting hundreds of cities from Washington DC to Washington State in their SUV, beginning June 15, 2012.  While discussing all the fun activates Sandi had in store for the big trip, we learned she was curious how to best manage her beauty routine in less than perfect circumstances.  From time to time, Sandi needs to be ready at a moment’s notice to participate in an event, or conduct an interview, straight off the road while armed with little more than the mirror in her SUV’s visor.  Sandi, don’t worry, SerafinoSays has got your back or should we say front… giggle!  SerafinoSays knows just what to bring on your road trip.

“Happy Mother’s Day”

Written by: Kristan Serafino

What does “mother” mean to you?  In Greek mythology there is Gaia, the first goddess or better known as Mother Earth.  Then there is Eve, the Mother of Humanity, who is believed to be single handedly responsible for the pain of childbirth…thanks a million there Eve!  But what about Mother Teresa, who is widely considered the embodiment of motherhood and compassionate, but wasn’t even a mother.  No discussion of “mother” would be complete without mentioning the Queen Mother, who may or may not be a biological mother, but is considered the monarchical mother to hundreds and thousands.  And is any conversation about “mother” complete without mentioning the mother of all third-world mothers’, Angelina Jolie?

Enough of the silliness, but I do have a point.  While cultures have created a diverse meaning of “mother” they all share a common meaning… a position of authority, responsibility, and love.

It is written, “There is no greater love than that between a mother and her child.”  I have no doubts that in most cases this is so.  Yes, I remember my seventh grade science class when we learned you get one-half of your genetic material from your mommy and one-half from your daddy.  And yes, this miracle of life leads to some very interesting traits and combinations of chromosome patterns.  But, there is something about that whole child-bearer, umbilical cord, primary caregiver thing that has a tremendous, and lasting impact on a mother-child relationship.

All-in-all, mommies worldwide demand an exalted respect and have earned their holiday!

Happy Mother’s Day Mommy, I love you!

“Not Your Average Beauty Product”

Written by Kristan Serafino

It’s not a secret to anyone that knows me that I am a complete product junkie.  Fortunately my day job is to make the hair of celebrities and a private clientele look stylishly beautiful, therefore I am in constant search for the perfect products for every circumstance.  I am equally fortunate to have products regularly sent to SerafinoSays by manufactures, distributors, publicists and others to feed my product obsession.  Firms that provide FREE samples are all hoping we will test their product then write favorable review.  Although SerafinoSays has a policy to only write reviews on products we love for their quality, value, and uniqueness.  No product bashing here… only constructive reviews!  We determine a product worthy of a blog post only after SerafinoSays has tested the product on ourselves and others – time-and-time again – and come to the conclusion that we love.  We are not paid for our product endorsement or observations… we write about it because we love them.

And we don’t just sit back and wait for product to show up on our doorstep.  We are also highly proactive in our hunt for the next best ultra cool product or service.  This takes our staff on research expeditions to retailers ranging from national big-box stores to quaint boutiques, and everything in-between.  We thought we would share some of the products we have recently fallen head over heals for.  Go ahead and give them a try as you just might find them as fun and rewarding as we did.
