Spring Beauty Trends

It’s that time of year and we can’t wait to read what Celebrity Makeup Artist picked for his Spring Beauty Trends 2013

Written by: David Maderich

It’s spring beauty trends, darling – the perfect season to revamp your beauty routine and welcome a new season. Try my simply tips to shake away the winter beauty blahs and say hello to a sassy spring.

FACE – Spring is the perfect time of year to stock up on beauty potions loaded with sunscreen.  I love Lumene Finland BB Illuminating Anti-Aging BB Cream with Artic Cloudberry This amazing BB cream brightens, hydrates, covers imperfections and protects with a broad spectrum SPF 20. And, darlings, always remember to apply SPF to your neck and chest for extra protection – no chicken necks allowed!Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Lumene - SerafinoSays.com

If your skin needs more coverage, add a smidgen of concealer.  Try MAKE’s Soft Focus Corrective Duo - Conceal/Set and you are ready to go.Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - MAKE - SerafinoSays.com

Pro tip: If your concealer looks dry and cracked after a few hours, blend a touch of Dermalogica Ultrasmoothing Eye Serum over it for instant refreshing.Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Dermalogica - SerafinoSays.com

LIPS – After a long brutal winter, lips need all the help they can get.  Remember to always keep your lips moisturized with a rich balm. I love Sun Bum SPF 30 Lip Balm in Mango  not only for the yummy flavor but also because it never feels waxy.   Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Sun Bum - SerafinoSays.com

Once lips are deliciously moist, try spring’s most fashionable lip trend – nude lips.   I adore Rimmel London’s Stay Glossy Lip Gloss in Non Stop Glamour – a wearable peachy gold.

Pro tip: When choosing a nude lip color, always look for a nude one shade darker than your skin for the perfect tone.

HANDS – After a winter encased in gloves, it’s time to set your hands free. This spring, nude hued nails are all the rage.  Try Butter London Nail Lacquer in Tea & Toast and Crumpet – two gorgeous tan tones.  Try one color on your hands and the other on our toes!  Fabulous.   Spring Beuaty Trends 2013 - Butter London - SerafinoSays.com

Pro tip: If your hands are parched by winter winds, keep a tube of Burt’s Bees Ultimate Care Hand Cream in your purse and apply several times a day.Spring Beauty Trends 2013- Burt's Bee's- SerafinoSays.com

BODY – It’s time to shed the wool sweaters and coats and slip into shorts and short sleeves. For glowing J Lo skin, I suggest Shea Moisture Olive & Green Tea Body Butter from head to toe.Spring Beuaty Trends 2013- Shea Butter - SerafinoSays.comPro tip: Before bedtime, smother your body in a rich cream and toss on an old pair of sweats for an all night moisturizing treat.

EYES  – My two eye makeup wake-ups are mascara and eye cream.  To sooth winter weary eyes, smooth Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm  around your eyes morning and night to calm puffiness and reduce dark circles. Spring Beauty Trends 2013 - Algenist - SerafinoSays.com

I am in love with Covergirl’s new Clump Crusher Mascara  I swear, this mascara never clumps and make your lashes thick and plump and ready to flirt.  Spring Beauty 2013 - Mascara - SerafinoSays.com

Pro tip: Replace your mascara every 6 weeks to guarantee fresh and germ free applications.

“Dallas – John Ross Ewing Jr – Josh Henderson”

Dallas – John Ross Ewing JR – Josh Henderson

On your next trip to New York City I highly recommend getting tickets to the LIVE taping of Kelly & Michael Live.  They have an incredible chemistry as hosts and a wonderful ability to engage the audience in their fun.

Although I wasn’t in the audience last week, I was having my own fun backstage as the Hairstylist (referred to as the Men’s Groomer) for the show’s special guest Josh Henderson.  Josh may be best known to the television audience as John Ross Ewing, Jr. from TNT’s smash hit Dallas.  Josh’s character plays the son of J.R. Ewing, one of the most familiar characters in television history played by the late Larry Hagman.

As you can see by the interview, Josh was having a blast interacting with Kelly and Michael.  And if the laughter from the audience throughout the the interview is any indication of Josh’s popularity then Dallas should have a successful second season.

Yes, yes, yes, I too was having fun hanging with Josh in the green room…Hee-Hee!

“Cinderella on Broadway”

Cinderella On Broadway - SerafinoSays.com

Cinderella on Broadway

One of the many perks of living in New York City is having ready access to Broadway, home to the world’s most spectacular musicals and plays.  So when my good friend Jill, founder of Glamamom, invited me to attend Rodgers + Hammerstien’s Cinderella I was over the moon.  I thought I had hit trifecta; 1) Jill and I would have a fun girls night out of dinner & theater, 2) I would see my favorite Disney childhood stories live on stage, 3) I would see my sweet friend and Broadway star Laura Osnes bring Disney’s most popular princess to life.

I had the wonderful opportunity to style Laura’s hair when she attended the Tony Awards as a Nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.  Attending Cinderella with Jill would be my first time seeing Laura perform live.

Jill and I prepared ourselves for the show by first visiting the concession stand for a handful of Twizzlers and a bottle of water.  After Jill and I were seated I found myself restless while waiting for the lights to dim.  You would have thought I was preparing to go on stage to perform and not Laura.  Not even the Twizzlers could take the edge off my nerves.  My mind was racing imagining what Laura would be experiencing at that same moment.  Would she have stage fright?  Would she have a wardrobe malfunction?  Would the the orchestra play off key?  Would her co-star have bad breathe?  And most important…would the glass slipper really fit?

Minutes later the theater lights dimmed and the orchestra erupted in perfect pitch.  Laura walked on stage and immediately captivated the audience without having belted out one single note.  As soon as Laura began to sing I felt whisked away to an enchanted kingdom and became complete immersed in the production.  It was hard to imagine this was really the same girl I text, tweet, cut, style and share stories with over the occasional cup of java?  Of course not, it was not Laura Osnes on stage, she embraced the role and became Cinderella in the appreciative eyes of the audience.  I lost sight of my friend and only saw the Disney character I loved as a child.

The production did a great job recreating the sets for the stage.  It is age appropriate for children of all ages, as well as adults that simply want to re-live their childhood.  After all, it is a Cinderella Story.

“Grey Hair”

Grey Hair - SerafinoSays

Grey Hair

One area of aging where men have a distinct advantage over women is grey hair.  While the cause of grey hair is the same in both sexes, societies perspective on grey hair differ significantly.  Grey hair on a man is considered distinguished.  Not so much on women.  Silver foxes are even considered sex symbols.  Look no further than George Clooney, Anderson Cooper, Ted Danson, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere, Mark Harmon, and Steve Martin to name only a few.  Heck, even Ben Affleck and President Barack Obama rock the grey.

Screen Shot 2013-03-20 at 8.03.04 AM

The cause of grey hair is the same in men and women alike.  And, the lasting result greying hair has on the hair’s texture is also similar in men and women.  There is also no difference in the hair care treatment necessary to keep aging hair healthy, shiny and supple.  But men typically do not care properly for their sophisticated looking greying hair.

SerafinoSays is going to explain to men the why’s and how’s of caring for grey hair.  If we take a look at what causes grey hair then we will better understand the need for grey hair care.  Hair gets its natural color from a pigment called melanin found in the cortex of each hair strand.  The distribution of the melanin granules into the cortex determines the hair’s color.  Unfortunately, like many aspects of our body, over time the production of melanin diminishes.  Each individual genetic makeup determines the rate of the pigmentation loss in each hair follicle that results in hair turning grey, and even white when the production of melanin stops.

The loss of melanin production to the hair’s cortex contributes to the lack of moisture in the hair shaft hair.  This lack of moisture wreaks havoc on the texture of the hair causing it to become dryer, course, wiry and even curly.

Since there is no cure for grey hair, men need to learn how to adapt to the new texture of their hair and take steps to keep their greying hair healthy.

Here are steps recommended by SerafinoSays:

Step One – Moisturizing Shampoo

Out with the old shampoo and in with the new moisturizing shampoo.  Maintaining moisture in a hair shaft is the most important way to maintain your hair’s health.  Well-moisturized hair is less brittle, and brittle hair can result in accelerated or greater hair loss.  Moisturizing shampoo works with the hair’s natural oils to retain moisture in the scalp, root and individual hair follicle.  Apply a quarter-sized amount of moisturizing shampoo to damp hair. Massage the shampoo into your scalp, and follow with a warm water rinse.

Step Two – Moisturizing Conditioner

Conditioner adds to the natural moisture of the hair and helps retain the shine, and intensity throughout the day.  Dry hair requires a conditioner that contains a high amount of essential fatty acids that makes dry hair more pliable.  By using a good moisturizing shampoo with a good moisturizing conditioner you are taking two stpes forward toward healthy grey hair.  Apply a quarter-sized amount into your palm, and massage it into your hair.  Do not apply directly to the scalp, as it does not need treatment.  Leave the conditioner on for three to five minutes then rinse away the conditioner with cool water.  Dry your hair by patting and gently rubbing with a towel.

Step Three – Add Shine

Grey hair lacks moisturize leaving the hair shaft looking dry and dull.  By adding texturizing paste, pomade or creams you will not only add shine, but create a modern texture to a hairstyle.

When preparing products to apply to your hair, I recommend placing a dab of the product on your finger tips and emulsify.  While many applications tips recommend you first apply the product to palm of the hand, it is your finger tips and fingers combing the product through the hair and not not your palm.

SerafinoSays Pro Tip:  It is the finger tips that are manipulating the hairstyle not the palms.  Begin at the back of the head and massage the products towards the front. By beginning at the back it will eliminate any over application to the hair line that might cause the hair to appear as it has to much product. Style hair to desired look.

Fashion Show Presentation Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013 - SerafinoSays

Fashion Show Presentation – Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013

While it’s entertaining to attend a perfectly choreographed Fashion Show Presentation, I find it even more exciting to watch the organized chaos occurring backstage.  It’s fascinating to see how all the magic is created behind the scenes.  While at Daniel Vosovic’s Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection, I ran into two friends who were leading the Makeup and Nail teams that were responsible for the creation of the stunning looks worn by the models.

Led by Celebrity Makeup Artist Kristin Hilton, and her team of MAKE artists, they created a contemporary inspiration which referenced modern aristocracy – “a polished girl with a playful side.”  A bold, statement lip was the focus of the look which was offset by the regal, porcelain-like skin.  Click here to add Kristin’s MAKE suggestions to your beauty vanity! (I LOVE the makeup)

SKIN:
Step 1: Kristin began by removing excess makeup with MAKE’s Makeup Remover Wipes
Step 2: She then applied AM/PM Moisture Cream to hydrate dry, winter skin
Step 3: Working from the palm of her hand, where she saturated a stipple brush with MAKE’s Soft Focus Foundation, Kristin blended the foundation onto the model’s skin to create a flawless, porcelain look. Concealer was used where needed to cover any blemishes or under eye darkness
Step 4: Kristin used MAKE’s Expert Veil Brush to powder the forehead, under the eyes, and around the nose to deliver a matte finish with a bit of extra coverage to ensure the look was perfectly polished
Step 5: Finally, Kristin used Matte Finish Eyeshadow in Kalahari – a medium cappuccino brown with yellow undertones – as a contouring blush

EYES:
Step 1: Kristin began by filling in the brows where needed to create a natural yet defined look. She used Expert Brow Definer Brush and Brow Sculpting Duo to provide definition
Step 2: MAKE’s Matte Finish Eyeshadow in Kalahari was also used on the eyes where Kristin brushed the shade into the crease of the lids and blended out to create natural shading
Step 3: She then lined the water line with Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Very Brown and blended Satin Finish Eyeshadow in Aubergine – an intense eggplant purple – into the lower lash line to set the look
Step 4: Finally, Kristin curled the lashes with MAKE’s Eyelash Curler, applying several coats of Defining Mascara. She added a touch of Skin Illuminator in Skir to the inner corner of the eyes to brighten the look and add luminosity

LIPS:
Step 1: Kristin began by applying concealer to the lips to offset any pink pigment that may interfere with the dark, dramatic colour she and Daniel chose
Step 2: She then lined the lips with MAKE’s Lipliner Pencil in Rum Raisin and filled in lips with Silk Satin Lipstick in Beetroot – an intense wine with red undertone

Oscars Fashion written by Fashion Director Anna Lenhoff

The red carpet was on fire at the 2013 Academy Awards this past Sunday in Hollywood. Stars and starlets were dressed to the nines as they worked it on one of the best dressed red carpets I’ve seen in a long time. Trends ranging from sleek and modern, old Hollywood, metallic, pastel hues and bursts of bold color were worn by Hollywood’s finest. Here are the Serafinosays awards for the best fashion moments at the biggest fashion show of the year!

Best Dressed Awards

Best Pastel – Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence was the woman of the evening in more ways than one. She looked stunning in her pale pink Christian Dior.  Ball gowns can make a person look like a walking pastry, but this one was done right. Class, flattering and accented with 74 karats of glittering Chopard diamonds dripping down her back. This dress was SO worth the face plant! For the after party she changed into a more form fitting Calvin Klein dress in metallic silver. Her perfect accessory for both dresses??? An Oscar of course! Cheers to you J Law!Oscars Fashion - Jennifer+Lawrence - Getty Images - SerafinoSays.com

Best Old School Hollywood- Halle Berry

Halle Berry well deserves her title as an ex bond girl. She is always taking fashion risks and pulls them off with a combination of sex appeal and class. She looked unbelievable in her black and silver Versace gown. With strong shoulders that screamed early 80’s and bold stripes, most would be wary of this dress. Halle took on the challenge and OWNED it!

Best of the Metallic Trend- Naomi Watts

A huge trend of the evening was metallic, and no one did it better than Naomi Watts in her sequined Armani Prive stunner! The liquid metal gown had unique asymmetrical neckline and a cap sleeve. Her after party ensemble was just as fab as she continued with the metallic trend in an Emilio Pucci black and gold one shoulder dress. The Liev Schreiber arm accessory was a bonus as well! Naomi, you win best overall in my book! Shhh don’t tell the others!

Oscars Fashion -Naomi-Watts-Oscars- Getty Image - SerafinoSays.com

Best Sleek Modern Look – Charlize Theron

Charlize and Channing Tatum (Swoon!!!)  danced to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight” which couldn’t have been more fitting for Charlize who looked beyond stunning in her white Christian Dior Haute Couture gown.  Her pixie haircut, perfect makeup and karats upon karats of Harry Winston diamonds completed her look. She was so statuesque they could’ve given her out as an award!

Best Pop of Color – Maria Menouno

Barbie went brunette for the Oscars …oh wait, that is Extra’s co-host Maria Menouno! I’m privy to color, especially a daring pop of pink, pink, PINK! The Romona Keveza strapless mermaid gown stood out from the crowd and certainly left an impression! Not sure if you were channeling Barbie or Marilyn but it worked Maria!Oscars Fashion - Maria Menouno- Getty Images - SerafinoSays.com

Best Accessory – Samantha Barks

Samantha Barks diamond star burst Necklace was simply…TO. DIE. FOR. The brilliant neck candy was by House of Waris for Forevermark which is a company that focuses not only on beauty and rarity but most importantly responsible-sourcing.  Most of us can only dream about wearing a 14+ karat diamond like this baby…fingers crossed there will be an affordable replica out there pronto!

Oscars Fashion - samantha-barks- Getty Image - SerafinoSays.com

Best Power Couple – Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

What a great night for Ben and Jen! Not only did Argo win best picture, their daughter Violet won a local spelling bee….cute! Not sure what sweet Violet wore at the be, but mom and dad both looked incredible in Gucci frocks.  Jennifer’s custom made gown had an amazing ponytail of ruffles that floated behind her and the shade of purple complimented her skin tone. Ben rocked his manly man beard with charm and looked oh so handsome in that lux Gucci Suit.

Best Hot Mess in a Dress – Kristen Stewart

I’m sorry Kristen. I love you and think you are a beautiful, talented girl and I feel just awful about your injury but you have to keep in mind that YOU ARE AT THE OSCARS!!! This is one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the world! You are a Hollywood starlet! Brush your hair, put a little blush on, pull yourself together and have a sexy vampire carry you down the red carpet next time.

Makeup Tips

Makeup Tips - Photog: Stuart Tyson - SerafinoSays.com

Makeup Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artist Mathew Nigara are regularly seen in leading publications.  When SerafinoSays caught up with him on a photo shoot for Cosmopolitan Magazine we could not resist asking his 5 Favorite Makeup Don’ts.

This quote should just about sum it up:

“There are no rules of makeup BUT there are guidelines to follow.” Celebrity Makeup Artist Mathew Nigara

5 Don’t of Makeup

  1. Using a concealer which is too light for your skin tone.
  2. Over use of Powder.
  3. Unblended ANYTHING.
  4. Using Lip Liner a line instead of using it for depth of color.
  5. Using an abundance of lip gloss. Unless you are wearing a specially painted French lip that requires a lot of upkeep only use lip gloss in the center of the lip to keep the lips looking supple.  Color should be added with Lip stick.

  2. Pixie Cuts – Courage, coolness and BAD ASS confidence is what it takes to wear a short pixie cut.  Bravo Anne Hathaway, Halley Berry and my favorite Charlize Theron.Oscar Hairstyles 2013 - Getty Images - SerafinoSays.com
  3. A bump and a Sweep -  Hair pulled back away from the face, height at the crown and low chignons result in sophistication and elegance.  Amanda Seyfreid, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams show us how to do it best.Oscar Hairstyles 2013 - Getty Images - SerafinoSays.com
  4. Old Hollywood Glam. – No hairstyle screams Hollywood Glam more than flowing waves.  Thank you Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Saldana and Jessica Chastain for bringing back the Golden Age of Hollywood.Oscar Hairstyles 2013 -Getty Images - SerafinoSays.com

“Kim Kardashian Eyelashes”

Kim Kardashian Eyelashes -Photog: Unkown - SerafinoSays

Kim Kardashian Eyelashes

If you envy Kim Kardashian eyelashes that are long and full but look more natural than mascara, your answer is individual “faux” lashes. Unlike full fake lashes, individuals are small lash pieces you apply exactly where and how you want to. They come in different lengths—short, medium, long—and can be found at most drugstores. If you’d like to try them (and you should!) here’s the individual lash “how-to”:

We turned to Celebrity Makeup Artist & Beauty Blogger Robyn Tamura for her Kim Kardashian Eyelash application Tips:

  1. Squeeze a bit of lash glue onto a tissue or the back of your hand.
  2. Using TweezerMan tweezers, grab a single lash piece then scarcely dip the lash tip into glue.
  3. Allow the glue to dry on the lash tip for a few seconds.
  4. Delicately place the lash on the lash line where you want length and fullness.Kim Kardashian Eyelashes - SerafinoSays.com
  5. Keep applying pieces until you get the total lash look you want.  Use as few or many as necessary.
  6. Use the same technique to apply lashes to your other eye.  Try to achieve a balanced look.
  7. Once eye lashes are in place, apply a coat of Laura Mercier Mascara.Voila!  The lashes you’ve always been looking for.

Important PRO Tips:

  • If you find the kind you lash you bought are too long, you can use small scissors to clip them shorter.
  • Be sure not to clip flat and straight across, clip unevenly to keep them looking natural.
  • Use a steady hand to place the pieces just right because the glue dries quickly and holds firmly at the angle you place it.
