“Supermodel”

Models, models everywhere can only mean one thing; its that time of year again, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City.  SerafinoSays  is excited to announce we will once again conduct video interviews backstage with hair stylists, makeup artists, manicurists and fashion designers. But to kick it all off, we thought it would be fun to pay tribute to the Super Models that have walked the Runways, graced the covers of leading magazines and most important… they influenced what you bought.  You don’t think so? Let me remind you of a exchange between Miranda Priestly (played superbly by Meryl Streep) and Andy Sachs (the clueless intern played by Anne Hathaway) in the classic movie “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Miranda Priestlly: [Miranda and some assistants are deciding between two similar belts for an outfit. Andy sniggers because she thinks they look exactly the same] Something funny?

Andy Sachs: No. No, no. Nothing’s… You know, it’s just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. You know, I’m still learning about all this stuff and, uh…

Miranda Priesly: ‘This… stuff’? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select… I don’t know… that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent… wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.

SerafinoSays is just saying…this is big business!

“Madonna, Gwyneth, Sienna & Demi Drink It”

SerafinoSays is a big proponent of drinking water!  In fact, it may just be the most important daily element of your beauty routine.  Regardless of how many creams, lotions, gels, or sprays you utilize, nothing can add a more natural glow than a well hydrated body.

The Mayo Clinic insists, “Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions.  Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.”

Now that you’re convinced of the importance of proper and adequate hydration, I am the first to admit that some days the thought of drinking another 64 ounce bottle seems physiologically impossible.  Therefore I am regularly trying to “spice” up my bottle of water with additives from as simple as crushed ice to a slice of  lemon/ lime.  But some days drinking my daily required amount of water is tantamount to water boarding.

We have found the perfect solution!  Wait for it…..Coconut Water.  We have seen Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller and Demi Moore carrying bottles of coconut water.  Why?  Because it has been recommended by the finest doctors, therapists, and trainers.  It is easy to locate thousands of articles written on coconut water and all its benefits.  The team at @SerafinoSays has found its favorite;  Zico Water.

We turned to our friends at WebMd to get their thoughts on the benefits of coconut water.

“In many countries, coconut water is thought to have health benefits.  Coconut water is 94% water and fairly low in calories.  It seems to be a good source of B vitamins and potassium.  Coconut water contains electrolytes, various plant hormones, enzymes, and amino acids.  Some substances in coconut water could theoretically have antioxidant benefits in the body.

Scientific studies of coconut water have been limited.  One study suggested that drinking coconut water might be associated with a lower rate of heart attacks.  Another small study found that coconut water significantly lowered systolic blood pressure in 71% of people with hypertension.

Coconut water has been used as a way to rehydrate after exercise or illness.  Coconut water has even been used as an emergency substitute for IV solutions.  Also, it may be a good storage solution for a tooth that has been knocked out until someone can see a dentist.

However, for now, there is no scientific evidence that coconut water offers clear heath benefits.”

SerafinoSays figured if coconut water is good enough for Madonna, Gwyneth, Sienna and Demi then it’s good enough for us!  Thank you Zico for being so Yummy!

“If It’s Good Enough For Your Grandma It’s Good Enough For You”

Feeling a little nostalgic over my Aunt’s surprise 80th Birthday party has me reminiscing about my Grandmother, or “Grams.”  Angelina was a second generation Italian American that influenced every step of my young life.  And to everyone that knew her… the best Italian cook west of Italy.  The abundance of fond memories are stirred frequently while simply walking the streets of the City; a whiff of her favorite perfume, the sight of a perfectly quaffed white haired lady, or an Italian love song, each can instantly trigger a distinct memory of Grams.

Just this weekend while perusing the aisles of a local CVS store I came across so many of the products my Grams used, and it got me thinking.  These products were good enough for my Grams, and they have clearly passed the test-of-time, so why wouldn’t they just as good for me today.  Let’s take a look, and who knows… possibly this trip down memory lane will encourage you to add one of your “Grams” favorite products into your daily beauty ritual.  Let’s call it a nostalgic tribute to the women that helped shape us into the strong, yet charming women we are today.

My Gram’s Beauty Products:

1.  Ponds Classic Cold Cream (Est. 1846) : POND’S has been known for simple, effective skin care products that work.  That’s why generations of women have trusted POND’S to leave skin looking and feeling simply beautiful.

2.  Chantilly Perfume (Est. 1941) It was Marcel Billot who was responsible for another great Houbigant fragrance, Chantilly.  A timeless Oriental classic fragrance with a blend of roses, jasmine and Oriental mysteries.

3.  Barielle Total Foot Care (Est 30+ Years):  Barielle’s story began in the unlikeliest of places: the legendary Belmont Racetrack.  Husband and wife equestrian aficionados, Howard and EsteLee Price, devised a breakthrough formulation to condition the hooves of their million-dollar thoroughbred racehorses.  As weeks went by, the Prices discovered that they had also created a million-dollar product for nails—one that would quickly become an integral element in the modern manicure and pedicure.  The cream, which strengthened their horses’ hooves to resist splits and cracks, had the same effect on the nails of the jockeys that applied it.  Reformulated for women and men, the miracle product “Nail Strengthener Cream” was born and Barielle was founded.

4.  Helene Curtis (Est. 1927): In 1950 Helene Curtis developed the generic term hairspray for its new aerosol product, Spray Net.

5.  Vaseline -  The Vaseline® brand, which was established over 130 years ago. Over the years, the brand has worked to develop products that are used by millions of people everyday for a number of reasons — from maintaining healthy skin to helping severely damaged skin to protect and heal itself. 6. Helena Rubinstein  (Est. 1902): Her stylish clothes and milky complexion did not pass unnoticed among the town’s ladies, however, and she soon found enthusiastic buyers for the jars of beauty cream in her luggage. Spotting a market, she began to make her own. Fortunately, a key ingredient was readily at hand.

7. Olay - (approx Est. 1949) – The name “Oil of Olay” was chosen as a spin on the word lanolin“, a key ingredient. It was unique in the early days because it was a pink fluid rather than a cream, packaged in a heavy glass bottle. Wulff and his marketing partner, Jack Lowe, a former copywriter, had tested the product on their wives and friends and were confident in its uniqueness and quality.

“5 Beauty Essentials for Super Bowl Sunday”

This Sunday’s Super Bowl audience of 110+ million is as diverse as any that have watched a televised event in history.  The most obvious contrast is the reason why people watch the game; many are unwavering fans of the game (although a surprising 40% of the viewers are not fans of football), others are fanatical Patriot or Giant fans, or loyal American or National Conference fans, and then there are those people that are simply fans of a good party and funny commercials.

Food is another measure of diversity among fans.  Viewers will consume roughly 8 million pounds of popcorn, 28 million pounds of potato chips, 54 million pounds of avocados (yum…guacamole), and 1 billion chicken wings.  Of course a lot of this food will be washed down with 350 million gallons of beer.

Yet another measure is the characteristics of the audience.  The Super Bowl will be broadcast to nearly 235 countries and territories, in 34 languages…of which only one country where the word “football” doesn’t mean soccer.

SerafinoSays came up with another rather unorthodox measurement that is accompanied with a perfect solution.

5 Essentials for Fanatical Football Fans:

1.  The Lip Biters: Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Soothing Lip Balm.  Soften up with this luxurious lip balm. With aloe vera to smooth and hydrate, and peppermint oil to calm and soothe.

2.  The Nail Nibblers: Creative Nail Design Toughen Up  A strengthening 3-free base coat for thin, weak nails.

3.  The Hair Pullers: New York Giants or New England Patriot Hats.  No better way to keep your hair hidden!

4.  The Teeth Grinders:  Eclipse Sugar-Free Gum.  The crunchy outer shell delivers a burst of flavor providing incredibly fresh breath and great taste.

5.  The Screamers: Luden’s Throat Lozengers. Soothes Everyday Throat Irritation

Always remember, it may help to  laugh, scream, cry and even pray, but tossing a can of beer at your flat screen TV will never help your team win.  It will just be a waste of a good can of beer!  Go Giants!

“Beauty Has No Age”

This past weekend my Aunt Louise (aka “Weezie“) celebrated with a surprise 80th Birthday Party.  Family flew in from all over the country to celebrate in this wonderful occasion.  At first I thought surprising an 80 year old might not be the best idea, but considering my aunt is a nurse and half of her guest list consisted of doctors and nurses, my concerns were put to ease.  Anyway, my Aunt Louise is the definition of “80 Years Young” with an abundance of energy.

Seeing my Aunt’s shock when friends and family cheerfully shouted SURPRISE, followed by the tears of joy was truly priceless.  The evening was filled with dancing, eating, drinking, storytelling, and tons of laughter.

The highlight of the night came when Aunt Weezie and her 92 year old friend Stella discovered the photo booth.  The table outside the photo booth was piled high with crazy hats, scarves and glasses.  Aunt Weezie and Stella carefully tried on several options before settling on just the right combination of hat and glasses.  Aunt Weezie claimed the “Jackie O” glasses while Stella reached for the “naughty” glasses.  (Yes, “naughty”, her words exactly…LOL)

The ladies settled into the booth, closed the shade and all barriers of proper lady-like demeanor was left on the other side of the curtain.  From outside the booth you could hear screams of laughter and an occasional “Gosh darn, we look good.”

It was at that moment that it hit me.  Beauty has no age!  Regardless of their ages, the camera in that booth perfectly caught the inner beauty of Aunt Weezie and Stella.  The rest is just as they would say “gravy”.

Attention all of you shopaholics out there!  If you’re anything like me, you’ve been spending like a mad woman since Black Friday!  Preholiday sales, post holiday sales, end of season sales, how you can resist that temptation?  Now that the clearance racks are nearly bare the stores are starting to set resort.  This means light weight fabrics, flirty frocks and COLOR COLOR COLOR!  There’s only one teeny tiny problem; you are not going to an exotic island to traipse around on the beach in a bikini.  It just wasn’t in the budget this year (and no it had absolutely nothing to do with all of those purchases you made!)  Sadly you are stuck at home with a wind chill of 5 below and you are layering every piece of clothing you’ve purchased since November just to keep warm! The name says it all!  Wash away those winter blues in this flirty little top.  Layer it under a wool blazer or cashmere cardi and you can take on anything old man winter wants to throw your way!  In the spring this will look perfect paired with skinny jeans.  For the office, throw on a lighter weight blazer.

“5 Must Haves In A Man’s Gym Bag”

Ever have one of those days at the gym when you would rather be almost anywhere else… I’m imagining the Diner behind a stack of fluffy pancakes, warm maple syrup cascading over the edges, with just the right dash of powdered sugar for presentation… but I digress.

I wrapped up my workout a little early today and found myself waiting in the lobby for my sweetheart to finish his workout.  To pass the time I began a mental survey of how many men walked out of the locker room carrying a gym bag in addition to their briefcase or messenger bag.  I was surprised to calculate 11 out of 15 men left with a duffel bag along with a briefcase or messenger bag.  Some of these duffel bags seemed big enough to carry a SmartCar.

Somewhat perplexed, I asked my sweetheart what exactly men carry in such an enormous gym bag.  Although he is part of the minority that does not carry a gym bag I assumed he has observed the packing or unpacking while in the men’s locker room.  Was it a clothes iron, complete with ironing board, or did they carry dumbbells for extra reps during the workday?

Apparently, unlike a woman, men are oblivious to what brand of bag another dude is carrying, let alone what’s in the bag.  The best my sweetheart can guess is men carry five staples in their duffel bags; that day’s wardrobe, a backup tee-shirt & skivvies, extra dress shirt, shoes, deodorant, toothbrush disposable razor and possibly cologne.

Are you as shocked as I am?  Do men really travel with such inadequate products for their skin, hair and overall masculinity?  It is certainly not because they lack the extra room in their bag.

SerafinoSays decided it was our duty to help our men out with a little Go-To-Guide for what men should include in their gym bag.

SerafinoSays Men’s Gym Bag Go To Guide:

1.  Skin Care: Yes, men need to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun and take steps to prevent wrinkles. We love Kiehl’s 3 Step To Ultra Moisture

2. Hair: Once your hair is clean and conditioned, make sure to try a styling product like American Crew Forming Cream to add texture and shine to your finished style.

3. Body Lotion, Pitties and Cologne: Philosophy Be Somebody Unscented Body Lotion, Molton Brown Cool Buchu Deodorant Stick, John Varvatos Cologne

4.  Smooth Skin: Taylor of Old Bond Street Almond Shaving Cream & Gillette Razor

5. Flash Us Your Pearly Whites: Tooth Brush, Tooth Paste, Dental floss & Listerine PocketMist.
