“Food For Healthy Hair”

Food For Healthy Hair

As a child growing up in an Italian home it was authoritatively ordered, imperative and compulsory to eat.  Eating wasn’t just “eating.”  Eating was a loud, animated and gregarious celebration of food.  There was no way of avoiding it… Mangia!  From assorted nuts, cheeses and olives, to pastas, meatballs, and gravy, to pastry, breads, and fruits, to wine, Anisette, and Sambuca, my grandmother, mom and the usual gaggle of aunts made certain there was a wide selection of food on the table.  Today some might argue that a daily bowl of pasta and meatballs might weigh heavy on the carb intake, but my mother always complemented a meal with a healthy main course of vegetables and protein. (Food for healthy hair)

I can still hear my mom yelling, and sometimes threaten with the ol’ wooden spoon, to “finish your chicken and vegetables and don’t forget to drink all your milk or you won’t grow to be tall and strong.”  Seems reasonable today, but as a young kid I was preoccupied with scheming how to bypass the veggie and bird portions of the meal and dive directly into the dessert.

I also vividly remember by grandfather reiterating what my mom was saying, but his reasoning was less appealing.  He shouted, “Finish my chicken and vegetables; it’ll grow hair on your chest.”  Grandpa never took the time to adapt his adage to the audience.  Grandpa, I love you, but I am sure happy that was not one of the side effects of eating healthy food.

Many years later, I not only regularly pour myself a tall, cool glass of milk, but I actually prefer vegetables and protein dishes.  Evidently the shared wisdom of my mother and grandfather left an indelible impression.  Who knew!?

Healthy Hair Food: Poultry

  • Our fine feathered friends, particularly chickens and turkeys, are a source of high-quality protein that leads to healthy hair.
  • Weak, delicate hair is the result of a diet lacking adequate protein or with low-quality protein.  In addition, excessive protein deficiency can result in loss of hair color.
  • Poultry also provides iron with a high degree of bio-availability, meaning your body can easily reap its benefits.

Healthy Hair Food: Eggs

Health hair doesn’t care how you order your eggs; scrambled, fried, or over easy.  All it cares about is that you order eggs, since eggs are one of the best protein sources you can find.  Eggs also contain biotin and vitamin B-12, which are important beauty nutrients.  I guess that’s why I never met an ugly chicken.

Healthy Hair Food: Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, which promotes a healthy scalp along with good vision.  Since a healthy scalp is essential for a shiny, well-conditioned head of hair, you’d be wise to include carrots in your diet as snacks or toppings on your salad.

Healthy Hair Food: Dark Green Vegetables

Popeye the Sailor Man didn’t eat all that spinach just so he could have healthy hair, although he could have.  Spinach, like broccoli and Swiss chard, is an excellent source of vitamins A and C.  And why do you care about vitamins A and C?  Because your body needs to produce sebum, which is a result of a healthy diet of Popeye’s favorite energy booster.  The oily substance, secreted by your hair follicles, is the body’s natural hair conditioner.  Dark green vegetables also provide iron and calcium.  Forget goggling over Popeye’s muscles, next time check out his hair.

Healthy Hair Food: Low-Fat Dairy Products

Low-fat dairy products like skim milk and yogurt are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth.  They also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources.  Two benefits for the price of one!

If you are looking for some healthy hair foods “to-go,” try throwing a yogurt or cottage cheese cup in your bag when you head out in the morning to snack on later in the day.  You can even boost their hair benefits by stirring in a couple of tablespoons of ground flax seeds or walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids and zinc.  Have fun being your own mad scientist!

“Monday Makeover with Danielle S”

Monday Makeover Daneille S - SerafinoSaysWritten by: Kristan Serafino

Danielle S came to SerafinoSays from a friend of a friend on Facebook.  It began with Danielle S posting her absolute frustration with her hair.  Responding to her passionate plea for help, a friend of Danielle S recommended she reach out to SerafinoSays’ and learn about our Monday Makeover.  Pheww!  We admire your persistence Danielle S in discovering SerafinoSays and your reward is a well-earned Monday Makeover.

Danielle S is a woman who appreciates the impact of a compelling hairstyle and doesn’t shy away from regular change whether its subtle and imaginative.  Sounds like a SerafinoSays kind of gal.  But this isn’t the problem that drove Danielle S to Facebook for help.  Many of us can easily relate to the root of problem; life simply got in the way.  In the span of one year Danielle S tackled a new job, in a new city, while trying to settle into a new home.  Suddenly, everything seemed to take precedence over her haircut, hairstyle, hair color… all of it.  Suddenly, her hair was no longer a reflection of her sparkling personality.  Suddenly, maintaining her hair became a burden instead of a dramatic accessory.

As is our practice before we begin to offer advice on cut, style or color, we want clearly and thoroughly formulate a picture of our candidates likes, dislikes, and aspirations by asking them to complete the following questionnaire.  Or what SerafinoSays likes to call; our Inquisition. Read more

“At Home Hair Cutting & Coloring”

Hair - SerafinoSays.com

Written by: Kristan Serafino

Have you ever been walking down the street and noticed the person in front of you with roots several shades darker than the hair color covering the rest of their head?  Have you ever caught yourself staring at the girl behind the checkout counter while you wondered why the right side of her fringe is significantly shorter than the left?  Do you ever wonder how that happened?  Of course you have!  Better yet, you have probably been on the other side of these staring eyes yourself?

Having worked in a salon for many years, I learned that many people love to play “At-Home Hairstylist.”  I have to admit before I received my cosmetology license as a hairstylist, that I also fell victim to changing my hair color, cutting my hair and even worse in the 80’s trying to give myself a perm!  (Did I just date myself?)

What I have learned from this experience is two things;

  1. I had loads of fun playing hairstylist, and for a brief moment of time it might have even looked good.
  2. I would always end up groveling back to my hairstylist, fighting back tears, as the rest of the salon snickered at my slightly orange colored hair or sad variation of a very “un-trendy” mullet.

I know that you, like me, are going to experiment with the occasional quickie bang/fringe trim, touch up of your roots, and… god forbid, the attempt at a relaxer or perm.  It is my job as a “Professional Hairstylist” to let you know that I am on to you, I understand the uncontrollable urge and I want to at least steer you in the right direction.  But, when you come back groveling to your hairstylist to repair the damage, don’t forget to also bring a lovely box of chocolate as a groveling gift… Giggle!

NOTE:  This is NOT to encourage “At-Home” hairdressing; it is to help you learn from your mistakes and make the best out of a situation. SerafinoSays 100% encourages you to always seek professional help when it comes to hair treatments.  Surprisingly, it can often be the most economical solution in the long run.

“Top 5 Drugstore Beauty Bargains”

Drugstore - SerafinoSays.com

Written by @davidmaderich

You don’t have to break the bank to buy the best beauty products.  Many drugstore brands are equal if not better than their pricey department store counterparts.  Read on for my Top Five Drugstore Beauty Bargains – all for under $12!

Jergens Daily Moisture Dry Skin Moisturizer is my go-to body lotion.  Loaded with silk proteins and citrus extracts, this luscious lotion delivers 24-hour hydration and smoothing without a sticky after-feel.  Use it everyday after your shower or bath to ensure kissable skin.  Pro tip: Keep a bottle near the sink for easy access after hand washing.Jeregens - SerafinoSays.com

Believe me when I tell you I’ve tried every mascara at the cosmetic counter. But without fail, I always come back to Covergirl Lash Exact Mascara. Why do I like it?  For starters, it never clumps or flakes; and it applies smooth and even. I even love the waterproof version.   Pro tip: Buy new mascara every two months.Covergirl Mascara - SerafinoSays.com

In the world of beauty, BB Creams are all the rage. These miracle beauty balms conceal, moisturize, protect and clarify all in one tube.  My favorite is Garnier BB Cream because not only is it rich in moisturizers, it glides on effortlessly.  Pro tip:  Use two BB Creams – one to match the skin and a darker shade to add color to the face – apply the darker hue to the cheekbones for an instant bronzed glow.

Garnier B&B Cream - SerafinoSays.com

I used to spend big bucks on fancy cleansing products because most drug store brands either stripped my skin of moisture or did nothing at all.  Well, no more. L’Oreal Advanced Revitalift Radiant Smoothing Cream Cleanser is a rich foaming cleanser that removes every last trace of makeup and grime. It also leaves the skin moist and fresh.  And the squeezable tube allows you to use every drop.  Pro tip: This cleanser makes a great brush cleaner.Loreal RevitaLift - SerafinoSays.com

Lip-gloss is a staple in every gal’s purse.  I like a gloss that offers rich color as well as longevity – and that’s hard to find.   Maybelline Superstay 10 hour Stain Gloss is the perfect combo of color and durability plus super shine.  I have all 10 colors in my kit, but my favorite is Mauve Dream.  Pro tip: Scrub your lips with a toothbrush before applying any long wear lip color.Super Stay 10 Hour Stain Gloss - SerafinoSays.com

Imagine getting ready to walk down the red carpet at a big event like the Oscars and you experience a major wardrobe malfunction! Cameras flashing, film rolling…a complete WTF do I do now moment? From Janet Jackson’s infamous “nip slip” at the Superbowl to Sophia Vergara’s bare bum exposed through a broken zipper at the Emmys, wardrobe malfunctions can happen to just about anyone! Most of us haven’t walked down many red carpets but we have all experienced an embarrassing fashion disaster at some point in our lives. The best thing you can do is to be prepared and know some tricks of the trade. Here are a few OMG fashion emergency moments and ways to fix them! Stay cool calm and collected ladies, we’ve got you covered!

1. OMG I have deodorant marks on a black dress and my OK Cupid date is on the way!
Quick Fix -  Baby wipes or a clean damp sponge. Steer clear from paper towels or tissues because they will just leave you with a linty mess on your dress. Also try Gal Pal Garment Deodorant removers  Gal Pal™ Garment Deodorant Removers - SerafinoSays.com2. OMG my pantyhose just snagged and I can’t be late for an interview of a life time!
Quick fix – if you don’t have a spare pair to change into use clear nail polish to prevent the snag from becoming worse. Another great tip is to spray nylons with hairspray and let dry before you put them on which will help keep them from snagging in the first place. You can also buy pantyhose with higher spandex counts which have a better chance of not running like Donna Karan Nudes Control Top pantyhose

3. OMG my shirt is a wrinkled mess and I have a presentation in front of top management!
Quick Fix – Downy Wrinkle Releaser. You won’t get a straight from the dry cleaner perfect pressed look but it’ll get most of the wrinkles out and help you from looking like a frumpy mess in front of your colleagues. Tip* pour a little into a travel size spray bottle and take it with you on trips or keep it in your purse for emergencies. 4. OMG Grandma Marge just gave me a beautiful family heirloom ring but it’s a size too big! Don’t take the chance of letting it slip off of your finger and losing it or your mother will NEVER let you hear the end of it…like EVER. Instead try BlingGuards, invisible, disposable and hypoallergenic ring guards that will add a ring size to your finger and keep your vintage treasure intact! BlingWraps

BlingGuard - SerafinoSays.com

5. OMG I just caught a glimpse of myself as I walked passed a Starbucks window and I have enough pet hair on my coat to build another Fido. Quick Fix – We can’t carry around a giant lint roller all the time and although duct and masking tape do the trick we probably don’t carry rolls of tape around with us either… Pick up some of these handy little lint remover sheets and tuck them into your purse for fur emergencies like this. Hollywood Lint Removing Sheets Hollywood Touch Ups Lint Remover Sheets - SerafinoSays.com

6. OMG my button just popped on my shirt and my “girls” are uummm, out and about! The best solution is to have a sewing kit on hand. I keep one from a hotel in my purse. If there is no sewing kit in sight a safety pin will do the trick or if you can’t find one of those try an earring with a back and use it as a temporary tack. Travel Sewing Kit  Mini First Aid Kit & Mini Sewing Kit - SerafinoSays.com_l

7. OMG I’m on a date and wearing the cutest hot pink mini skirt but when I walk the zipper moves from the back to the front and I’m constantly shifting it around. Quick fix-  Hollywood fashion tape to the rescue! Put some of this double stick tape on the inside waistband of the skirt. Your skirt will stop shifting and you’ll be able to focus on holding that cuties hand instead of tugging on your clothes. You can also use the tape to keep a bulging blouse closed, fix a fallen pant hem, and close a wrap skirt. It’s miracle tape and one of my personal must haves. 8. OMG you are getting ready for your cousin Jenna’s wedding and your man’s only suit doesn’t quite fit the same as it did the last time he wore it which was at your sisters wedding well over a year and a half ago. It’s bad enough you have to show up at the wedding and listen to your mom and aunts comment about how your boyfriend of 2 years needs to put a ring on it, but now they will be all over his newly formed muffin top! Yes boys, you know you get them also (to much beer to little P90X!) Quick Fix – Spanx for Men! I kid you not. Suck it all in with a cotton control tank for men. Dudes don’t be ashamed…you can have that wedding cake and eat it too! Oh and while your at it, put a ring on it already would ya??

“Dr Hauschka’s Volume Mascara”

Makeup by Regina Harris - SerafinoSays.comMakeup by: Regina Harris

Guys and Dolls….. she’s back! The Skin Care Guru  is going to share another one of her products reviews but this time she has dove beyond the comforts of a skincare regime.  We are excited to be witness to the evolution of  “The Skin Care Guru”and what better do so than with a tube of makeup.

Written by: The Skin Care Guru

So.  You’re probably wondering why TSCG is writing a review on mascara.  Mascara isn’t a skin care item, its a beauty product!  (Then again, I’m assuming that you’re putting that much thought into this whole dealie, which in fact is unlikely to be the case….anyway.)  Yes, its true, mascara isn’t a skin care item.  BUT if you’re allergic to your mascara, or sensitive to it, or it runs and stains the skin around your eyes, causing you to vigorously rub it off, it becomes a skin care issue.  Why?  The skin around your eyes is one of the first areas to lose elasticity, so chronic puffing, pulling, stretching, and other no-no’s are likely to accelerate signs of aging.

Does that sound like I’m reaching for an excuse?  OK, maybe, because like most women I’d rather stroll out naked than without mascara.  However, I’m wildly sensitive to any number of ingredients and thus prone to redness, puffing, itching, etc.  After one particularly nasty reaction that left me looking like I had parasites invading my eyelids, I turned to mineral mascara, which seemed like a dream come true.  No parabens!  No phlatlates!  Then, my mineral mascara of choice was discontinued.  After sitting shiva for a week, I started an epic search for its replacement.Dr Hauschka's Volume Mascara

Last week, I received a tube of Dr. Hauschka’s Volume Mascara.  Every granola-eater knows Dr. Hauschka, one of the most venerable organic skin care lines.  But mascara?   Huh.

PACKAGING:  Plain black tube in a nice, normal size.  When did mascara packaging start looking like something better kept discreetly in a bedside drawer??

BRUSH:  Medium density spooly, no taper.  Fibrous.

CONSISTENCY:  Semi-wet.  Not so wet that your lashes stick together, though, instead, it goes on like silk without the downsides of a wet product.  Pretty much the ideal;  allows the user to brush on several layers quickly without snags.

CLUMP FACTOR:  Zero.  I mean ZERO.  As in none.  Kind of amazingly none, given that it does actually give your lashes some heft.  (See below.)

COVERAGE:  Medium.  One or two swipes looks fairly natural, three or four starts to look dramatic.  But still without a single clump, and even better, without the buildup at the tip of the lash that’s so common (and icky looking.)  So while the drama factor climbs, the undesirable stick-lash look is never a risk.

SMUDGE FACTOR:  Medium-high.  This was really my only gripe;  for my day-long mascara, I do expect staying power, and staying power that I don’t have to think about, as I am totally unlikely to look in the mirror between 7:30 a.m. and the end of the work day.  (Who wants to see herself in flourescent bathroom lights??)  At day end, I did find smudges under my eyes three days out of five, though not huge raccoon smudges.

Conclusion?  I would absolutely buy this mascara again.  Need to experiment a bit with smudge control, but love the effect, love the lack of clumps.

Michelle Obama’s new bangs are the talk of the town.  Who knew the first lady’s hair would steal the spotlight, and most of the paparazzi, from her husband during his Presidential Inauguration?  So when Cosmopolitan Magazine came calling for a hairstylists perspective on how to achieve the look, I was more than happy to respond.  I consider it my duty as an upstanding citizen.
